Best Shmups on Each Platform

Post by 1983parrothead »

Even obscure platforms and ports of arcade games, what are some of the best shmups on each platform? Here are some that I can think of that are the easiest to estimate, while some with question marks are my guesses. Correct me if I am wrong:

Virtual Boy: Vertical Force

Game Boy: ZAS

Nintendo DSiWare: Metal Torrent

Fujitsu FM Towns series: Tatsujin Oh

NES: Summer Carnival '92: Recca

SNES: Super Aleste?

N64: Star Soldier: Vanishing Earth?

GameCube: Ikaruga?

PC-Engine: R-TYPE Complete CD?

SG-1000: Star Force?

Master System: Aleste?

Mega Drive: ThunderForce IV?

Saturn: Radiant Silvergun?

Dreamcast: Ikaruga?

Vectrex: Scramble?

That's all I can think of for now.

Intriguing. Didn't know about this. My answers would be different for the rest. Even with N64 I think I might prefer the Space Invaders game on the system.

Corrected that for you. And I know what you're thinking, "cave hermit there's no PSX port you silly cunt!" Well last night after I performed some "favors" for Lord Yagawa (they involved lube and D batteries) he gave me the only copy of the PSX Battle Garegga port in existence. I can't show you because Yagawa said it was top secret and he was only showing it to me because he loves me :3

...No but seriously, Saturn: Battle Garegga.

 HAHAHAHAHA our Ogrelord Shrek will not be pleased with you for neglecting to worship him.
Also, I'm not interested in seeing this top secret copy anyway, it's probably full of bugs and glitches, and I'm too busy playing Raiden DX haha

The Game Gear version of Taito's Halley Wars is probably its best shmup.

Oooohh imo (from experience, so some systems will be missed out):

ZX Spectrum - R-Type

Mega Drive - Thunder Force IV

PC Engine - Star Parodier (a controversial choice I'm sure!)

PSX - Einhander

Saturn - Battle Garegga

Dreamcast - Zero Gunner 2

PS2 - Espgaluda

Xbox 360 - Ketsui

Arcade Only - Battle Bakraid

I'm sure almost no one will agree with my choices, but hey ho.

Dreamcast - Under Defeat

Zero Gunner 2 gets the HM. I think ZG 2 is the prettier of the two games, and the rotation mechanic is great, but I can never bet against the grittiness of UD.

Scramble on the veccy is a nice port but id rather play gravitrex, or is that too borderline?

PSX: either Zanac X Zanac (not a game, I know) or Sonic Wings Special. Depending on the way you like your monitor placed.

I couldn't get into Sonic Wings Special and I don't consider myself picky. (The boring music doesn't help.)
What do you enjoy most about it?

Agreed, Zanac Neo is fantastic.

Saturn: Battle Garegga

PSX: Darius Gaiden
Out of curiosity, where does Darius Gaiden stand on your Saturn list?

As for me:

NES: Gun.Smoke

PC-Engine (I've never played 1941, Nexzr or Spriggan): Soldier Blade

Genesis: Musha

SNES: Gradius III

Sega CD: Lords of Thunder or Robo Aleste (can't decide)

Saturn: Battle Garegga or Radiant Silvergun (can't decide)

PlayStation: Zanac Neo

Dreamcast: Mars Matrix

Jury's still out on PS2 and 360 shmups (not enough time in a day!).

Dunno, fairly high.

To be honest this is just a dumb bit of fun, like most similar threads on here. Trying to narrow it down to one "best" shmup is too difficult for some systems and probably shouldn't be bothered attempting.

The only ones I'm absolutely sure of are the DOJs.

I'm amazed that there are no two matching suggestions for the SNES.

My personal selection would probably be R-Type III. Dat boss-buster Hyper mode.

I will also put in a vote for Ikaruga for Gamecube, and R-Type Delta for PSX.

Is this just like personal favorites? I'm bored so I guess I'll participate:

(Only things I actually own)

Atari 2600: River Raid
Gameboy: Sagaia
NES: Gradius
Genesis: Thunderforce 4 (I lack experience with MD Shmups though)
SNES: Oshaberi Parodius
Saturn: Darius Gaiden (Fuck Yagawa, heil Taito!)
N64: Waverace
PSX: Raiden DX
Virtual Boy: Vertical Force (I mean really what else is there to choose? It's a mediocre game regardless)
NeoGeo: Sonic Wings 3
PS2: Gradius V
Xbox Original: Shikigami no Shiro
Xbox 360: Mushihimesama HD
PS3: Caladrius Blaze (it ain't out yet, but it will be)
Dreamcast: Triggerheart Exelica
DOS: Raptor
GBA: Gradius Generations (for lack of better options)
DS: Ketsui Death Label
PSP: Darius Burst
Sega CD: Sol Feace (what else is on SCD?)

...OK I'm bored again, that's enough for now
