PVM-20L5 Calibration Settings?

Post by nesboy43 »

Today I got my first monitor, a Sony PVM-20L5. I tried calibrating it using Avia Guide to home theater but I could not get it right. On the set I only have adjustments for brightness, contrast, and chroma. If I go to menus I can pick between two color temperatures, or set my own. When I set my own I am given the option of "Color Bias" and "Color Gain", not really sure what each one means or how I adjust overall saturation. Also, is there a sharpness control? Is the "blue-only" button supposed to make the image grayscale (no color what so ever)?

If anyone with a PVM-20L5 has some tips or settings they could share, I would love to have them, thank you.

Blue-only mode has a pretty good writeup here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_only_mode
It was also used to look for noise in the signal.

Don't overlook doing a "full-screen" calibration though.

BIAS and GAIN...it ought to be simpler just to try them out to see what they do. Don't push these too high. As Sony says (totally different model, but still applicable): "Used for white balance adjustment." BIAS adjusts white balance "at the lowlight;" GAIN adjusts it "at the highlight." In other words - they adjust white balance at the darkest and brightest parts of the image.

The 6500 preset is more than likely close the 6500.

Gains control the balance of RGB in whites (60-100 IRE), Bias controls RGB in blacks, (0-40 IRE). Don't adjust the Green it has the most effect and can mess up the gamma.

Here is how to use blue only, bear in mind that it isn't 100% accurate, on my 1454QM I had to calibrate the blue only mode from the service menu because there was still some green and red coming through (I have the equipment to do that, so don't try it yourself). http://www.glennchan.info/broadcast-mon ... ration.htm

Thank you, this really helped me out and I was able to properly calibrate phase and chroma usong blue only mode and SMPTE bars.
