Dumb things you did because of SHMUP/video game induced rage
I once raged because of Ketsui and slapped myself in the face so hard I bent the frame of my glasses. Also, one of my original SNES pads has had a wobbly R-button for the last twenty years (still works flawlessly, though) because I'd thrown it into a corner really fucking hard. Don't remember the game that caused it, unfortunately.
Right, let's hear what you've got. Threw gamepads at the wall? Punched your TV? Own up, fucker!

My cousin always would rage when we played Goldeneye on the n64. He got so mad once he tried to throw the controller , but as it was plugged into the n64 it swing around and hit my other cousin square in the face. We didn't see that n64 for a while after that.

When I was young, I wanted to get a Link's Awakening clear file with zero deaths. Things weren't going well, and I became more and more frustrated, until I headbutted my Gameboy, breaking the screen.
My parents bought me a new one for some reason. :3

On my last life on Galaxians I saw the triple fly by with the queen alien coming down and I was right in the line of fire. I went into a rage and randomly wiggled the joystick left and right frantically. Only to miss every single bullet perfectly. I then went on to score another 20k.

I was first for the whole duration of a 8 player? Can't remember how many linked machines they had but there was a lot. Some tart bashed me into the Sonic corner on the last lap only for the other 7 racers to overtake me. I slammed the wheel and kicked the machine in rage and cussed a few obscenities.
I've pulled the joystick out of the console by mistake before.
My friend used to shout "Fucking Miyamoto and his sticky polygons" whilst playing Mariokart 64 because he couldn't escape the wall on the sides. I tend to agree that game had sticky walls.
Once I was getting a really high score on a game whilst some friends were watching. Because one of them didn't like videogames he was getting bored. He said "what would Richard do if you pulled the power?". So the other one who was watching pushed the power button. I went fucking ballistic and threw the whole lot of them out of my house. Once I calmed down I got over it.
but it is amazing what you do in certain situations.

Police 911: Yes, it is a damn frustrating game with what seems to be a punishing rank system. Once I got TRULY pissed after being hit in the club/lounge scene, shaking with rage. Muttered a couple obscenities under my breath (IINM, one of them rhymed with "Brother Trucker"). At the respawn, I spotted 5 gangsters lined up. Something took over me and before I knew it I fired five shots in about 0.75 seconds, ending up with five kills and no misses. After that I stood there with one big shit-eating grin as the scene ended. Someone watching the game had this OMG look on his face. LOL.
Kinect? KIN NOT.

Re: Dumb things you did because of SHMUP/video game induced
I remember several occasions where I've tossed my PS3 controller on the floor/below the tv (our main tv is on top of this small cabinet type thing. idk how to describe it but that's the thing I hit). It's always been that same controller and as a result it's a little busted.
Other then that I am notorious for shouting and getting pissed at various games in general. Platforming games are the bane of my existence yet I still play them.
I do recall a few shmup related incidents where I died because of one of the only bullets on screen. I went into a rage saying shit like "Wtf?! I saw it coming! I knew it was there! So WHY THE FUCK DIDN'T I ATTEMPT TO DODGE IT?!" In most cases when I get pissed and start shouting, I'm yelling at the game or platform it's being play on, but that particular time I was pissed at myself.

Broke my discontinued pad because I double ko'd on Gigafacer in Dimahoo.
Trying to play Halo 4 generally led to me doing stupid things all around because that game is just the most god damn frustrating game to try to play against douchebags that know what they're doing.

Threw a SNES pad due to the lava pipe death trap maze in R-Type III's Stage 4. Probably the worst specific example of memorization hell in any STG.

Re: Dumb things you did because of SHMUP/video game induced
Typically I am good at realizing when I'm starting to get too frustrated to play and stop myself before doing anything dumb but on rare occasions I fail to do this and I end up punching myself which is usually enough to knock some sense into me. Enough to make me stop playing at least.
Seems a lot of people have tossed controllers and such. Lots of my friends have done so too. I never understood that, I always seemed more interesting in kicking my own butt instead of the controller over videogame failures!
PS: Punching yourself is not advisable! Kinda hurts.

Not strictly game related, but I did work for Dell once supporting their old XPS gaming PCs before they bought Alienware and broke my hand punching a desk out of sheer frustration during a support call with a customer. I didn't think people this awful existed, someone so stupid they couldn't understand that the problems they were experiencing were entirely their fault who sat screaming and crying at me for almost 3 hours and almost drove me to the brink of insanity. If you met me you'd know I'm the most chilled out open minded weed smoker, but this cunt was just an absolute travesty of a human being who should have been sucked out of his mothers cunt and shat into space.

Re: Dumb things you did because of SHMUP/video game induced
I have never actually gone into full on rage because of a game (although I have gotten close), but one of my friends gets really pissy when I play fighting games with him: a year or so ago he invited me to play Injustice (which I never played before), and I almost immediately started winning nonstop by choosing joker and spamming high and low joker venom barrels ad infinitum. He started raging, threw a controller against a wall, and then banned Joker on the grounds he was cheap and couldn't be countered (he's a massive scrub). Around this same time I was at his house playing Brawl with a bunch of friends, and I refused to attack at all: I would just dodge roll and air dodge away from everything while spamming Wario's most obnoxious taunts over and over. My friend got increasingly frustrated, and eventually he got eliminated from the match by someone else while focusing on me. He then threw his controller against the wall as hard as he could, screamed "god damn it", and ran upstairs. 5 minutes later he came back down, tears in his eye, and turned off the Wii while we were finishing that same match. We were both 17 for the record.

Re: Dumb things you did because of SHMUP/video game induced
Good Lord ^ are you still friends?
Ha. I have a friend who delights in finding cheap spammy ways to beat me at fighters. It's got the the point where we find more of these techniques together to troll our other friends. I get kinda salty sometimes when losing to anyone at fighters but my rage is always expressed in "rematch" or "again, damnit!" How else can you iron out your mistakes?
shmups are still the rage king as far as i'm concerned because you've no one to blame but yourself.

I had a friend who is kinda the same way, claiming that a method or character I used to win is cheap. There were times where I would play the cool guy and go "fine you're right, it's cheap" instead of starting an unneeded argument.
Jesus! I don't think I've ever been that frustrated by anything in my life! Though those brawl shenanigans sound hilarious. A different friend of mine is very skilled at that game, and that sounds exactly like the kind of thing he'd do.cave hermit wrote:Around this same time I was at his house playing Brawl with a bunch of friends, and I refused to attack at all: I would just dodge roll and air dodge away from everything while spamming Wario's most obnoxious taunts over and over. Re: Dumb things you did because of SHMUP/video game induced
We're still good friends, but he refuses to play fighting games with me now. I pretty much never get angry at games because when I play games I'm doing so to enjoy myself and be happy; even when I lose I'm just happy to have played. If I'm going to rage at a game I might as well go do something productive since there's no point in doing something with my free time that just makes me angry. The only times I really get borderline pissed is when my OCD is worse than usual and I fuck up a SHMUP session because I have an uncontrollable urge to touch the upper right corner of the screen during the boss fight or some retarded shit. Otherwise I get that it's my own fault that I lost, and I just need to git gud.

Re: Dumb things you did because of SHMUP/video game induced
Haven't raged from shmups before, but the time attack mode of Shadow of the Colossus on PS2 was the bane of my existence for a while. Specifically the big flying one where you had to shoot its airbags with arrows to down the creature so you could jump on. The time limit was like 20 minutes, and I ran out of time right before dealing the final blow....two times in one sitting.
I smashed my dual shock 2 on the ground and never played the time attack mode again. Not just like oh i threw my controller and it happened to break. I knowingly brought it down as hard as i could knowing it would be destroyed. Like I had to sacrifice a controller for the sake of my own sanity. SotC is still one of my favorite games, but i only get down on the normal story mode if I ever play it these days.
Normally Im pretty sane about that stuff, but theres just something so infuriating and frustrating about spending 40 minutes on one thing and failing. The waste of time with no progress in games is one thing that always makes me rage.

Re: Dumb things you did because of SHMUP/video game induced
Early one Saturday morning, after somewhere between 10 and 15 losses in a row to me at Street Fighter Alpha 2 on SNES, my little brother swung his SNES controller at me like a flail and it hit me right on the bridge of my nose. He realized he had gone too far right away and ran out the front door in his pajamas. I followed him all the way down our street, blood streaming from both nostrils, but his fear was strong and propelled him forward. He got away. It was over an hour before he came home and by then parents were aware of the situation so vengeance wasn't possible.

Re: Dumb things you did because of SHMUP/video game induced
I remember playing Tekken 2, I think I was trying to earn the last hidden character or something. I lost an important round but not the match and in a fit of rage I mashed the controller and headbutted it. At that moment I realised that pressing every button on a PS1 controller resets the game for some games. The rage hit and I simply twisted the controller until it split in half and fell apart.
