Opeth

Post by Gaia »

Ya I know, used to be good now they suck, at least according to many older fans.

Anyone here into them? 11 albums is commendable if nothing else. Something seriously happened with Mikaels voice after 2006. I would kill for a Blackwater Park 2 but at this point you have to see where Mikael is coming from. It's been taken down but "eternal rains will come" is very proggy and probably better than anything on Heritage. Seriously. And I really like heritage.

I don't want to write 10 paragraphs about a band if no one cares about them, but if anyone does, let's get some discussion going!

I haven't listened to them in a while, but I do really enjoy Blackwater Park and the other albums around that time period.

They kind of got more "progressive" but still death metal until damnation really. (Deliverance is a bad album, you could see how much he cared for Damnation more). Ghost reveries was Mikael trying to make Blackwater Park 2 and then Watershed was just him not knowing how to "leave" metal, basically.

Heritage was decent but to completely abandon your roots after 9 metal albums is a bit abrupt.

Every track on Deliverance was better on the Lamentations performance.

I got into Opeth via Heritage, but I do enjoy their heavy stuff a lot. There's 8 of those albums though, so I'm fine with having more proggy stuff.

Didn't like them when I liked black metal, can't remember why. Nowadays I want to like them but I just can't stand bm(or blackened death metal, whatever) at all. Life blows.

I put all of my eggs in the basket of Meshuggah and never looked back.

I've seen them play live twice, the second time being their 20th annaversary tour which I believe was in '09 or '10. They played all of Blackwater Park and two songs off each of their other album. If Åkerfeldt killed his voice before then I certainly couldn't tell. Pretty damn good show and one of those bands that I definitely prefer live.

Got into Opeth back in the 90s just after Morningrise came out, but I started with their first album, Orchid. I wasn't into death metal at all back then, but I heard so much praise that I had to give Opeth a try. It was too rough for me, couldn't handle it.

Eventually gave Morningrise a try, and it wasn't quite as raw sounding as their first album. Eventually fell in love with it. Went back and grew to enjoy Orchid as well.

Stopped listening to Opeth after My Arms, Your Hearse came out. Began listening again with Blackwater Park. Eventually went back and picked up Still Life which I also enjoyed, and grew to like My Arms, Your Hearse.

Nothing newer than Blackwater Park really stuck with me. I liked Deliverance, but never as much as the previous albums. I liked their slower songs on other albums, but I couldn't enjoy much on Damnation.

Own but barely listened to Ghost Reveries and Watershed. Do not own Heritage. Curious about Pale Communion, but... eh, sometimes you just gotta stop buying albums.
