Platinum Games creating Legend of Korra

Post by Some-Mist »

Figured there were probably some PG and/or Avatar fans on here.
Platinum Games just announced Legend of Korra (a third person action game) as a PC, XB1/PS4, 360/PS3 multiplat title which takes place between books 2 and 3 of the series.

first teaser:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cavjWODIZ3k

My first thought is that tv/book based games are typically garbage shovelware... but it's platinum games and they haven't really failed me yet.
I'm not much of an Avatar fan myself, but anything PG + action game related has me interested. also pretty stoked that I don't have to buy a PS4/XB1 for it.

I'll be bumping the thread with more info once it leaks.

edit:
Korra scribe Tim Hendrick is writing the story, which takes place between The Legend of Korra’s second and third seasons. As the series' leading lady, players will use the Avatar's fire, earth, air, and water elements in combat to fight familiar enemies such as Mecha Tanks and Chi Blockers, as well as other Benders in the 3-on-3 Pro-Bending arena.

A Webfoot Technologies-developed turn-based strategy version of The Legend of Korra will also hit Nintendo 3DS this year. Where Platinum's action game is all about fast-paced martial-art combat, the 3DS game will "focus on tactically maneuvering Korra and her allies on the battlefield."

Look for more on Platinum's The Legend of Korra game, including our hands-on impressions, later this week.

Hype.

LoK is beautifully animated as a show [book 2 is kind of eh in terms of plot] and this game it's made by Platinum. There's nothing except excitement to be had.
I wonder why Platinum decided to sign on for this? Like, it's a fairly good match [close combat action sort of thing], but I sure as hell never expected it to happen.
Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.

I get the feeling that this will be either pretty great or pretty facepalm-worthy, with little room in between...let's hope Platinum get the time and resources to do the license right.

I have a feeling that the 3DS game by Webfoot Technologies will be the latter. They have an iffy track record.

Can't get excited, there are too many factors working against it. Loathsome American publisher; bland, kid-friendly cartoon license, cross-console generation development, digital-only release. Activision and Nick are bound to exert too much creative control over the mechanics and audiovisuals to safeguard the license; we can't expect a unique interpretation of the setting and characters like Metal Gear Rising provided.

At best, I expect it to be on a similar level to GHM's Samurai Champloo and Blood+ PS2 games. I at least hope it sells well enough to subsidize other Platinum projects.

Hmm. I loved Avatar and Korra is alright, so the idea certainly intrigues me. Looking forward to seeing how it turns out.

the only reason I'm excited is because of PG... but all your points are spot on. It's the perfect recipe for a shovelware title... but it's Platinum and their worst release (imo mad world) is far behind them.

hopefully this isn't the starting point for the decline of PG... but they have been talking about continuing bayonetta on the Wii U with a 3rd installment so there's always that.

I'm told that Infinite Space was a quite poor space battleship sim, even for fans of that particular subgenre. Not a style of game that lends itself well to Platinum in the least.

ahhh completely forgot about infinite space. I tried it out on my DS and lost interest right away. I guess there were a couple of duds... there were a lot of gamers who also hated anarchy reigns but I actually had a blast with it.

I knew they would have to take the path Treasure did, to keep in business.

When your IPs don't sell, you gotta do stuff like this.

Hopefully it's good, and does well.

Before we assume the worst (a pretty safe assumption about games based on movies, anime, etc.), Avatar actually lends itself to the sort of brawler that PG can do quite well. In fact, it is sort of amazing the show hasn't really produced a high quality game yet given that the series has always been very tight action-wise.

Of course none of that means that PG has any real passion for the title, or are being allotted enough money or time. A lot of things that can go wrong, but there's at least a chance for something good to come from this.

Sound familiar? The more we watched and played The Legend of Korra, the more we felt it had some of the combat DNA of Platinum’s Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance.
http://bryankonietzko.tumblr.com/post/8 ... ng-in-2014
our buddies at Titmouse are animating the cut scenes
http://www.destructoid.com/platinum-is- ... 7032.phtml
They even jointly created the new villain, one that uses a new type of Chi blocking that has left Korra powerless at the beginning of this adventure. Her powers haven't been taken away completely, and as you go through the levels (with set pieces taken from the show such as Air Temple Island, Republic City, more), Korra will remember how to use her bending abilities once again.

But as you progress and level up, you'll upgrade your attacks and learn new combos. What makes the fighting top notch here is how seamlessly you can swap between your four powers as you're unleashing combos on enemies.

Water bending is good for long-range attacks -- either throwing out projectiles, or using a "water whip"-like move to reel enemies closer to you. On the other hand, air bending is best as an area-of-effect attack when dealing with a group of enemies surrounding you. Each bending style offers something unique, and it's best to mix up your attacks as much as possible. Oh, and you totally can summon an air ball and ride it around just like in the show.

you can go into the Avatar state

Countering is especially encouraged, most of all when dealing with boss-type enemies. It's a similar counter system to that of Revegeance as well, where you have to learn the enemy patterns to best time the counter over being babied and getting some notification to time the counter correctly
http://www.gamespot.com/articles/i-play ... 0-6420711/
Moves in the game are split into four different groups to correspond with the four different elements Korra can bend. By pressing the shoulder buttons, you can switch between the elements and, consequently, the different movesets. These aren't just the same actions reskinned, either: each element has its own specialization. Ranged attacks are exclusive to Water, Earth has slow, close-quarters attacks, Fire focuses on fast melee combat, and Wind gives you a balanced, versatile set of moves.

Each set has several different attacks, split between light and heavy strikes. Holding down either button will charge Korra and make her attacks even stronger. Different levels of charge are unlocked as the game progresses. The developer promises that the four different elemental sets allow for numerous different combos. Leveling up Korra will also unlock different light moves and collecting the game's currency lets you purchase heavy strikes and finishers.

Platinum has made sure that attacks are as fluid as possible, which means you can switch between elements on the fly, even mid-combo. He showed us sequences where Korra would bounce an enemy in the air with an Earth attack, shoot him with long-range Water strikes, jump up and land a dozen punches on him in rapid succession with Fire moves, then blow the guy away with a Wind attack. Finally, he would land and use one of the element-specific finishing moves to kill the enemy for good.

In addition to fluid offensive strikes, Platinum is also adding a counter system for players who wish to approach the game more defensively. If timed correctly, Korra can block and send long-range attacks back toward the enemy. Although this counter system works well, Kurooka said that the game is much more fun if the player takes advantage of Korra's offensive capabilities.

I don't think so... all those articles have the exact same pictures which I'm assuming are from the show. I was hoping for a gameplay video or screenshots myself.

Ohhhh, me too! Been playing a bit of Bayonetta lately (their best game I presume) and need to pick up metal gear rising at some point which I understand is pretty much designed to be played for score and nothing else.

Edit: OK, I'll admit the one thing I'm worried about is platinum designing a game for casuals (which seems like a sound market decision since it is a tv series tie-in), but one can hope that Platinum puts their efforts into creating a mode of play for their fans. No reason you can't have two masters here.

There's some gameplay footage and new info from this IGN stream (move the slider to 26:32:xx): http://www.ign.com/videos/2014/07/24/ig ... c-con-2014

4~ hours long with an unlockable hard mode
Probending mode
Scoring & rankings after every battle
I think I heard the Activision guy say that it was going to be $15, but I may have imagined that

I thought the game looked okay. Very simplistic in comparison to all of their other games, but that was expected. I'm just glad it has rankings; going for Pure Platinums is enough to sell me on the game.

Thanks for the vid, iconoclast.

Also mentioned there that the game uses the same engine as Revengeance, which is pretty interesting. And in direct response to CMoon, there will be two modes of play, Casual and Normal, the latter being the type of difficulty you can expect from Platinum. And the game's designed to be played through three times, basically NG+ where you start with more abilities each time with more difficult enemies, I guess.
