Capture device to use with Framemeister

Post by Legion »

Can anyone recommend a good capture device to use with the framemeister? I'd prefer external. I was looking at the Avermedia extremecap u3, but reviews seem to be a bit mixed. Most of the complaints are software based so I'm not sure if the issues have been resolved through updates.

I'm primarily concerned with capturing old consoles with 240p output. My setup will be console -> Sony PVM-20L2 -> Framemeister -> Capture device -> PC.

I use the Framemeister with the El Gato HD Capture. It's a pretty basic solution but seems to get the job done fairly well. If you want to check out the quality you can take a look at some of my 1CC videos (shameless plug, see my sig). Note: Only the "720 HD" vidoes are captured with the Framemeister.

SNES looks really good. Is the NES outputting RGB or composite?

You generally don't have to worry about software issues for the Extremecap because it's DirectShow compatible. It should work just fine with a lot of third party software (and most bundled software that comes with these devices is basic junk anyway). Never used one myself though.

From the reviews I've seen, the problem with the Extremecap is that it doesn't work with many USB3.0 ports. If it works it could be a great device. Depending where you're from, you could just order one and send it back if it doesn't work for you.

+1 for the Elgato HD from me. It works on any machine I've tried (including an older notebook with an i7), it gets the colors from the Framemeister right and it compresses the videos down to a level that doesn't require a 10TB raid if you want to record and archive longer footage.

Agreed. It's the same thing that turned me off the Blackmagic Intensity Shuttle. It requires a Renasas chipset. I think I'm going to go with the Elgato. Lots of good reviews and user endorsements and it's supposed to be easy to use.

Can I use the supplied AC adapter or do I need a transformer? I'm in Canada. ~117V AC at the plug.

Only the SNES and Playstation 1/2 videos are captured with RGB. I don't have an RGB NES yet, so those are all in composite, which admittedly does not look very good with the framemeister. I really need to get an RGB NES soon.

Just don't try to play off the Elgato's feed. It's behind what's actually on screen by like 2-3 seconds and very disorienting. On that note, if you also intend to provide commentary on your videos make sure to set up a delay on the mic so what you're saying matches the activity recorded.

I also use the elgato Game Capture HD with the Framemeister. Another great feature is that with the Framemeister's HDMI passthrough, I can leave the Game Capture HD plugged into the Framemeister permanently and still record/stream my HDMI-based consoles by just plugging them into the Framemeister. No unplugging/replugging in crap.

The Sony PVM has RGB pass through. So the console will hook up to the monitor and then the monitor will output to the Elgato. No delay this way.

I ordered Tim Worthington's NES RGB mod last week. It's pretty ambitious, much more involved than the N64 and TG16 mods. But I can't wait to see my NES games shine in RGB.

I actually just ordered earlier today based on this thread lol. I'm done some basic modding in the past (mod-chips for PS1) but nothing quite as complicated as this. Should be fun.

Awesome, guys. Hop into the NESRGB thread if you have any questions. Have fun!
