Backward Compatible PS3 Region Free
I am curious, is it possible to make the backward compatible early PS3s region free for the PS2 and PS1 games?

I think is only possible with cfw, cobra ode devices and similar.

CFW = custom firmware. I believe the cobra ode is a modchip that can inject or load cfw onto the PS3, or maybe replace the original firmware entirely. Not sure, but either way it will take some extensive modding.

ODE = Optical Drive Emulator.
That's not exactly what it's for though.

True. The BC PS3 just aren't worth the hassle from my experience - not to mention the dramatic increase in power draw and noise.

The issue is I use a framemeister and such and Chrono Cross well....changes 240p/480i constantly which causes flickering.ApolloBoy wrote:Or a chipped PS2 considering he also asked about PS2 games.speedlolita wrote:Buy a chipped PS1.
Which is why I want a BC PS3 so I can use it

If it is just because of that game, you can buy it on the PSN Store digital download, costs $9.99 and can be played on all PS3 models and PSP.The issue is I use a framemeister and such and Chrono Cross well....changes 240p/480i constantly which causes flickering.

I think you can make a US PSN account easily? Or was that Xbox...?

From what I have seen it is a bit cumbersome but possible though it is about activating main account being US and bullshit like that to have easy access to it.bobrocks95 wrote:I think you can make a US PSN account easily? Or was that Xbox...?

If you have a CFW PSP the solution is quite obvious... I don't know how much of that talk is welcome here though

Re: Backward Compatible PS3 Region Free
If you get a non-custom firmware, backwards compatible PS3, just set up your main (Eu?) PSN account on it, then add a second user, and set up the US account for that.
The secondary user can then use the USA psn store and download/buy stuff on that account all you want.
Let's assume you use the secondary (USA) account to buy all the stuff you want.
When done, just log out the secondary user, and log in as the main user (EU)
You can then play/run the games when logged in with your main EU account, it does not matter who is logged in in the PS3, everything is visible in the menus and can be run as if you own the content on the main account as well.
Be warned, PS1 games do not look the part, PS2 is a hit-and miss, at least it was for me. I just went backed to my chipped PS1 + Scart RGB on a real CRT which looked miles better.

Re: Backward Compatible PS3 Region Free
If you do decide to go the CFW route, get a PS3 that already has it installed or one with 3.55 or below OFW. Picking one up that needs to be downgraded would just incur additional cost.
