When was the last time you saw a shmup in an arcade?

Post by mehguy »

Well, the title says it all. The last time I saw one was 2 months ago and they had 1943.

Shmups are very hard to see in arcades over here, but when I do see one, it's always Strikers 1945 Plus. Talk about a terrible game.

Fucking Galaga at a Dave and Busters. Lame. They did have a Capcom greatest hits machine with Ghouls and Ghosts and Strider on it. Too bad they got rid of it and now have nothing of interest.

Raiden Fighters Jet at Challenge Arcade in Reading PA. This was like 6 years ago.

Even though they got some financial support from stride gum they closed down a few years ago.

Raiden DX last year at an indoor swapmeet here in my city. I recently went back a few months ago, and to my huge disappointment, it was gone :(

A month ago saw Raiden 2 and Dragon Blaze. If I ever see a Cave game I might be impressed. Probably not because they are already on my shelf.

Galaga's in near every one in this area of course. (Not a complaint)
The newest I've seen here is I think Truxton 2? Newest I've played is Twin Cobra.

I haven't been to a legitimate arcade in a long time. I'm assuming that the games they have at theaters and bowling alleys don't count. (and even then, it's still been awhile)

I do remember when I was little and I still lived in Ohio and not California, I once went to a theater that had a lone Galaga machine and nothing else. I was surprised they had it because the game was so old, and I played a round even though I could play it anytime at home.

A lot of the time when you see a Galaga it's because the owner of the place wanted it for himself. It has been like that since the late 80s.

I also forgot to mention that when I went to the Santa Monica Pier last year I believe, they had Aero Fighters in a Raiden Fighters cab and also what I believe to be an oddball "New" variant revision of Raiden 2, which I put about $5 worth of quarters into, despite the monitor badly needing to be degaussed. I couldn't tell the blue power up from the purple

Before Springfield Mall got torn down, they had Gunbird 2 in their arcade... but that was at least five years ago.

Otherwise, I'm guessing the arcade room at Magfest doesn't count (as most of us locals donate our boards to this event).

Not many arcades left in the Bay Area, but I do recall Gigawing and Dimahoo at Nickel City, and Wyvern Wings at Golf Land.

I am one of the lucky ones to be part of the London shmup scene. So I have had my fair share of shmup experience in the arcade. Clearing these games in the arcade is so much more fun than at home.

If any of you find yourselves in London you should post up in the London meet up thread!

I wonder if the MoA arcade has any shmups? Probably just Galaga if it does (which is an excellent game, of course, but I'd like to see something newer). I should probably go there again sometime...

What's in London? A friend of mine had been telling me about The Trocadero for years, so when I was over in London to see Doug Stanhope a few years ago we called in and it was basically dead. There were a few of the larger racing cabinets, but nothing like I imagined.

On topic - I saw a cabinet with X'Ain D'Sleena running in a take-away. Does that count?
I didn't dare play it, it's been years, but I used to be able to clear that thing on one life. I'd have been there all day.

Not since the mid 90's...nowadays,it's only driving and light gun games, you'd also be lucky to find those working properly...so sad.The 90's were the last time arcades were good in England.

I remember being in total awe when I was about 14 when we went to Blackpool in 1988, seeing the full size Space Harrier machine and all the marquee uprights for Salamander etc. It was like a trip to Mecca. I do miss that. Even with consoles, if there were still decent arcades here I'd still spend a few quid every week.

Yeah,it's so sad,I'd happily go back and stay in the 90's! At that time I lived near Southend seafront, every arcade along 'the golden mile' looked impressive even from outside, full size space harrier, out run, tons of cabs and the latest stuff.Back when sega, namco and capcom ruled.I love my consoles and stuff but hate that it helped kill arcades! They served as the perfect escape if things were crap at home.nice walk along the seafront, hearing the sounds of the machines used to instantly lift my spirits.

A better question would be when was the last time you saw anything but driving/gun games.

Last time I saw a decent shmup selection I must have been 6 years old, around 93/94, I mostly stuck to R-TYPE but it's awfully foggy.
Later shmups vanished but there were still some decent arcade games like fighters and beat 'em ups to play, this was around 1999 when I was 10-12, games like X-Men Vs Street Fighter, Punisher, TMNT and AVP, shmups were gone completely with the single unique instance of an Aero Fighters 1/2 cab in a bar somewhere, we mainly went there to play X-Men: Children of the Atom though I did drop a few credits on Aero Fighters mainly to see what each character's bomb was like.

I'm aware of hog,and it's admirable what the guys are trying to do there, without having been there personally,it just dosn't seem quite the same...for a number of reasons (based on yt videos) maybe i'm being a little unfair as you would have to go to check out the atmosphere but still seems quite modern for my tastes.I'm sure it would also be fairly difficult to recreate the feel of a late 80's/90's arcade in the current climate.

EDIT: it's funny,we (I) dreamed of the day I could play these games in the comfort of my own home, now that day has come and been here for a while,I want to go back to the arcades...how we took them for granted back then!

I was only responding to your point about there only being light gun and racing games.
The atmosphere thing is a fair point.
