XBOX v1.0 GPU fan alternative?

Post by spaceape »

Im searching for some information about what too do to reduce noise coming from the tiny gpu fan of the original old xbox version 1.0. Do anyone know what the biggest thickness and diameter fan is that i'll be able to fit without sawing stuff off the console?

For example will something like the scythe slip stream slim: http://www.scythe-eu.com/en/products/fa ... -slim.html og even a normal 25mm thick fan work if only you fasten it correctly? If not what is the prefered maximum thickness and diameter (80mm diameter 25mm thick?)

I looked around here and there for components a while back. Unfortunately it seems that the PC enthusiast's quiet fan revolution doesn't often trickle down into one-off or specialist fan designs. Maybe this could change, though, as quiet fans in compact sizes are always in demand for consumer electronics.

I also want to ask whether you're sure it's that interior fan, rather than the 70mm (iirc) outer one that is making the most of that noise. I read that some people did a little bit of case modding to stick more modern fans on in the 80mm standard size. Again, unfortunately the 70mm size seems to be a specialist design.

Im pretty sure it's the 40mm gpu fan because it's so high pitched. I've owned another higher version xbox before (no gpu fan) and i've always been able to quiet the noise with the xbmc settings.. Not this time however.

Ofcause i could just unplug it and check to be sure. :)

The most quiet fans i've ever heard were scythe s-flex 120mm fans. It seems moving to either a smaller (higher pitch) or bigger fan (louder "whoosh") is worse sounding. 25mm thickness also seem to be the most silent design were thicker often make clicking sounds and thinner sound cheaper as well.

When i look under the xbox dvd-rom drive there seems to be some extra free space for a thicker fan, how much is anyones guess. :? And there should be space for a 120mm fan as well if i mount it off-center. :|

Or i could just replace the thermal paste and take off the fan completely. Some have also replaced the heatsink with one from a >1.0 xbox.

Or just live with it and blast games loudly.

IIRC, you can remove the fan altogether and replace it with a passive 1x1 heatsink. So, old stock or sawing down a Pi heatsink or something. I was only able to find 1x1's in a quantity of 40 and at an inflated price.

Iceberq Pro, fits GeForce 4 cards, can replace both the CPU and GPU fan/heatsink. If that's not down your alley just source a larger heatsink from later models.

Also be aware you can set rear fan speed in a modded Xbox. This isn't the GPU but if it vents more heat then your GPU fan may not work so hard.

So now that it's been a few years, and products have come and gone (mostly gone), what's the current recommendation for dealing with a v1.0 Xbox GPU fan that sounds like a woodchipper? Is it more ideal to get a v1.2+ GPU heatsink, versus a generic 1x1?

I would reccomend quieting the fan by using lithium grease on the rotor.

I wouldn't reccomend replacing it with an active heat sink as heat sinks help fans distribute heat by creating more surface area.

You cannot solve heat buildup without air exchange or cooling.

Thanks for this; the lithium grease definitely helped with the noise. Still has a bit of a whine to it, though.

I was thinking a good alternative would be a v1.2+ heatsink; they're significantly larger and clearly must be doing a satisfactory job.
