Music that belong in a smhup
Music that belong in a smhup
While we all know that smhup-music is the best there is, sometimes composers elsewhere gets it right as well.
What are examples of music that you think belong in a shmup.
Here's the one that suggested this tread to me:

Joke topic aside, any music that isn't outright bad "belongs" in any game. If you want to make a Dark Souls with hardcore techno, please do.
ex.: 2d sonic + rfj music = o/

I've used this music as BGM in rRootage, and it works really freakin' well:

I edited out the part before the music itself actually starts
Edit: rRootage is definately one of my favorite smhups

none of these guys have done videogame music, but I would love for Allan Holdsworth to do music (even at this age) for a shmup. Especially something along his synthaxe 1986 release "Atavachron"

I would go for "Funky Shit" as the main soundtrack and including "The Beam" sound effects from Star Trek The Motion Picture (V'ger sounds) to the end of level bosses! This would be a great schmup!

Re: Music that belong in a smhup
So I must admit that I have only very quickly skimmed this thread, but I should like to make the observation that most of the music here very strongly tends towards music that is written in the style of video game tracks but discovered in a context outside of said medium. However, this is certainly not the only way to approach this question, and I would like to suggest some sounds that take an alternative approach to answering the OP's question, i.e., music composed in a style completely different from that typically placed in shumps but, when combined with shmup gameplay and usage habits, could create mutual benefits for both the player's experience of the game as well as the listener's enjoyment of the music. Okay here we go:
You can listen to one or both of these while you read the following paragraph:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lr0Vg24lKQQ
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PLSj_MW8itA
So, one fo the reasons lots of old people dig classical music is because it has a lot of depth, in the sense that you can listen to a good classical piece for decades and still discover new aspects of the piece that had never resonated with you before. Typically, this sort of design is antithetical to the aims of video game music, which are meant to primarily be catchy, focusing on storng melodies and/or consistent drum beats to get the player into a particular mood while also not diverting so much of their attention as to detract from their gameplay skills (this is mostly an accurate observation for older-style games, as people have been pushing for games to be more artsy in the recent past - I feel like this encompasses the genre into which shmups are generally placed). However, I think that the unique circumstance presented in shmups in which the player is forced to grind small portions for days and days to achieve passable proficiency, even for a most basic vanilla 1cc, gives rise to a unique opportunity to connect on a much deeper level to music. Since a player will experience so much focused listening, their experience can definitely be enhanced by the presence of a lot of musical depth, which a lot of old classics can definitely provide. This is not to say that such pieces are not without their problems. For instance, it's not unusual for a piece of classical music to span half an hour, which is the typical length of an entire shmup, which can detract from the harmonic variety presented to the listener over the course of the game. Moreover, the mood changes in such pieces are strictly timed in, so the game would need to be designed carefully with respect to the length of boss battles and the like (a feasible mechanic would be to have timers on the bosses, and arrange for popcorn enemies or the like to fill in the time if the boss is defeated early, but this would seem awkward for bosses at the ends of stages). Anyways, I think it could definitely be done, sort of as a modern day realization of Wagner's ideal of total art, but it would take some work to make all of the parts fit together.

On the other end of the musical spectrum, there's jpop/kpop/cpop whatever stuff. The above video is a stellar example of this in action. The motivation for this recommendation comes from a thread posted a little while ago about the role of purely female casts in shmups, at the conclusion of which I believe many people agreed that the presence of a strongly attractive female cast greatly enhances the quality of a shmup, not just as another outlet for masturbation, but in terms of the ways one enjoys and focuses on the game itself.
