Burnout style drift games

Mt favorite game by far is Burnout 3, I probably played 2000 hours online.

Any drift racers out recently you guys like? Paradise is OK for me but not quite Burnout 3, which feels more arcadey and like Thrill Drive. I did enjoy Ridge Racer on XBLA, and Grid was fun. What about Grid 2 or other codemasters games? Need for speed the cars seem floatey to me, and I need 60 FPS.

Are you sure you're not exaggerating? I can't imagine playing a single game for even 500 hours before completely losing interest. It might be easier to imagine if you were talking about a MMORPG.

This! BG2 and BG3 are the most overlooked underrated racing games in existence. I thought long about buying these games, because I never heard anything about them so I thought they might be bad games. Au Contraire. Nothing comes close. Initial D does not come close. Nor do any of the Out Runs. And believe me, I like these aforementioned game a lot.
I've put a lot of hours into BG2 and BG3. They come second place in terms of playing time. Second place right after Street Fighter II for the Super Famicom back in the day. Yeah that much.
The least worst Burnout game is Burnout 2 IMHO. Which is an okay game I guess.

Well, we've done some time attacking on Battle Gear 3 on R-S and a few of us have plans to get BG2 time attack started, so come post your times if you feel like it.

Battle Gear 3 did not seem all that "Burnout style" to me. We'll see about 2, but I don't expect it to be any more Burnout-like.
Burnout games (especially 1) are about doing stuff like what you can see in certain movies. I watched Ronin in the midst of my extensive Burnout 1 playing times, so I could see the makers' intention clearly. Neither 2 nor 3 have quite matched the fun of making even the A.I. crash in 1.*) If you don't use the rear-view mirror in 1, you may not be ready to savour the experience yet. It's like making your own action movie.
I think Criterion tried to do something along those lines with Black as well, but that game didn't do it for me. (The original Max Payne - PC version - on the other hand...)

*) All the more engrossing on split-screen, despite the halved framerate.

Now, if we're talking silly fun drifting and hilarious A.I., there's always Mashed: Fully Loaded, if not quite the same genre as Burnout (by the way, it's also RenderWare-powered). The PC version outputs very high resolutions.

You're right about that. BG2 and BG3 are indeed nothing like any burnout game.
There's no need to look further for Burnout gameplay in these games.
BG2 and BG3 are true arcade games. You really must like arcade games to like em, I guess.

One game needs to be namedropped badly - Jak X - for two reasons, no less:

- it's FAST and

- it's pretty.

Now, as a Burnout 3 veteran, you'll probably find Jak X way easier to 100%-complete, but I think some folks keep playing online by hook or by crook. Then if you had some issues with handling in Jak 3, you might not find Jak X remarkably improved in this regard, but... it matters less than you may expect.
Warning - play it without memory card in the slot (plug one in only to save, then pull it out). Auto-saving is glitchy and can't be disabled.

True story - having completed Jak X I bought the much-hyped Burnout 3 (my first Burnout game), and as I played the latter, I kept thinking "Is that it?" Simply, they did not get any prettier or faster than X that gen. Since then, I got F-Zero GX too and nope - as serious as it gets, technically it's not as impressive as Jak X.
Sure, it's all very tech-demo, but there is a game covered in all the glitz.

I am very confused right now. Back when it first came out I sank a ton of time into Outrun 2 on the X-Box.

Am I misremembering things, or does Outrun 2006 play absoluteley nothing like 2 proper? Physics are bouncier and it's damn-near impossible to crash. Ourun 2 was highly technical, especially when going for AAA rank. 2006 seems like you're racing bumper cars on a track that auto-corrects your heading. Also, rubber-banding rivals.

So, have I just totally forgotten how the original played?

Coast 2 Coast mode mostly. I loved the challenge mode of 2 and was hoping for more of the same in C2C. For the most part it's been great, but it struck me as odd that I wasn't penalised for rubbing cars during the "Don't Crash" challenges and could get perfect scores even when making mistakes.

Also, "Cut the Lines" still sucks and I have not seen "Hit the Cones" from 2, which was the bane of my existence.

I'll put a few rounds through Outrun mode and see if the physics are changed. I could just be forgetting what 2 was like.

Akina Downhill in a Trueno 86... If you hadn't said so, I'd think that game was Initial D, apart from the inferior music.

Outrun 2006 definately seems like easy mode to me. The drifting in 2 sometimes felt a bit like you were static and the stage was just turning around you. C2C amplifies this when I know I took a turn incorrectly and was behind on my drift. Many times the game will just not let me crash and instead slingshots me around the corner. Also, drifting into traffic now barely slows you down. In 2 it was a significant hit.

It's still fun, and thank god those fucking cones and blue/red zones are gone from mission mode.

There are conversions of 2 and 2 SP accessible from the - admittedly confusing - menus of 2006. I don't know how faithful these really are, but they handle differently from Coast 2 Coast.
The conversion of arcade game (also included, but you don't earn OutRun Miles there) is set to Easy by default (can be changed in the menus).
