Best System for Shmups?
The Arcade has the biggest selection,
I'm turning into a Shmup freak it all started with Ikaruga on my dying Dreamcast (getting it for Cube in a few days)
and as a Shmup freak what should I check out?
I must play Radient silvergun before I die.
Current Faves: Esp Ra De (I wish Galdula was emulated) and G Darius

I Have Battle Garegga on MAME (booting it up now)
Rayforce is awesome too
I'd love to get a Saturn but my Dreamcast just died......gotta replace my baby (and the Memory card the Resetting Dreamcast zapped)
How is Chaos Feild Expanded and what does the Gamecube Ikaruga have that the DC Ikaruga doesn't/

I have most of those in some way shape or form.
I'm a huge Cave fan.
inspite of my name I haven't play any Shikigami No Shiro games...YET
I prefer Parodus over it's cousin Gradius.
Rtype is cool
Border down.........THAT GAME IS FUCKING HARD. I hate how the level changes when you die. make memorization impossible.
How do I earn more credits in Border Down?

For price and sheer number, the Genesis may actually be at the top (so many grerat shmups for under $5!), but for some shmup fans, the games here are a bit too old (*sighs*). Standouts include the technosoft and toaplan outings, Musha Aleste and plenty more (just go check out the genesis thread)
An import friendly PS2 has moved well up on the list since the PS1 shmup catalog + PS2 shmup catalog may well rival the genesis library. Standouts are once again pretty sizable: A huge number of Cave releases, Gradius V, Those R-Type games, Zanac Neo, Psikyo games, etc. The downside here is that one of my favorite games, Toaplan shooting battle, does not work on the ps2 and you'll need an import friendly (or Japanese) ps1 to play it.
For me, the Saturn comes in third only because the PS2 has picked up so many other titles recently. But with titles like Radiant Silvergun, Battle Garrega, Batsugun, Souky, Layer section, and many, many others, most of which are either perfect or nearly arcade perfect ports.
DC of course appears a little farther down, since its output of shmups is smaller, but almost everything short of cough*chaos field*cough* is absolute gold. I think part of my issue with the DC shmups is short of Gunbird2, almsot everything on the system involves some non-traditional shooting gimmick instead of just shoot--dodge--bomb.

In the US alone, the PS2 has way more exclusive shmups than cube and Xbox combined, in all regions, so complaining about their 'no 2D policy' is extremely silly. SCEA's policies are apparently far more lax than the competitors'. Of the modern systems, the only one that can hold a candle to the PS2 shmup-wise is the DC, and the PS2 blows it away with sheer numbers, even if you discount the PS1 library.MichiyoNoShiroIV wrote:PS2 is a maybe.......if they get lax on the No 2d polacy.

Well I could get a Supergun and PCBs...they all go down eventually.
The Only easy import solution to the PS2 is a Modchip and as I learned from my Dreamcast....those only make ineveitable system repair that much more complicated. Unless there is a PS2 Bootdisks I am unaware of.
But going on Arcade Hardware what are the newer Cave Games running on?

Well, strictly quantity-wise PCE (with CD) wins. There's around 110 shmups for the system.
But when we're speaking of the best ratio of quantity+quality shmups, that's where the opinions differ. My vote goes for the PS2.

No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

I like the Dreamcast because it is a solid system, decent loading times, reliability, and most importantly crispclear VGA output. The games also avaible for it are all great, but the problem is that there is too few of them.
Therefore I recommend PS2, because it now has a huge library of games especially if also taking PS1 games into consideration. This is a bit unfortunate considering how dodgy the hardware is, the only benefit as I see it is the true low resolution output and the controller.

My PS2 has served me well for over four years now, three of those with a modchip installed. Never had any problems.MichiyoNoShiroIV wrote: If I am not mistaken the PS2 is pretty Dodgy too
