Mighty tactical shooter (PC) turn based shmup

Post by Laurel_McFang »

I hate to make a new thread about another indie game, but this is one is interesting and asks some questions about what makes a shmup a shmup. It's a turn based shmup similar to frozen synapse. Basically you plot out the next 3-5 seconds of the game and then it plays out. A decent amount of power ups are out there. It looks intriguing.

Videos at their site. Rock, paper, shotgun did a write up about it recently.

Hm, can't say that this looks interesting to me. Never been a huge fan of TBS games and this also kinda defeats the point of why I like shmups, which is their immediacy and tension. The bossfight video on their site just looks tedious.
I am sure though that there will be people who enjoy this, but I am not too sure about how many of those will be the kind of people who dwell on this forum.

I was expecting it to resemble R-Type Tactics. Instead we have a STG that forces you to play it like a Tool Assisted Speedrun. No thanks.

Or should I say no thanks to people like you, hating on new takes on shmups and not even giving constructive criticism, if you don't have anything constructive than don't say DAMN anything. No wonder people are hesistant to make new shmups or try new things, because of people like you. Really. Give it a try before commenting if it sucks when it comes out.

ON topic, the game looks interesting, I'll definitely try it when it comes out.

I dunno, certain things just sound boring, even on paper. Like a roundbased Tetris. And imo this comes close. I guess you can call people like Pretas and me naysayers, but honestly, did those videos look fun to you? I reckon there are people who would find this fun, just seems like me and Pretas are not among them

I certainly would like to try it first before giving it a serious thought, because i'm a sucker for new ideas and hybrids. Let's see if it comes out first at all

On paper it sort of looks like it could work, I'lll concede that the videos look amazingly unappealing but I believe that comes down to how the idea was implemented. The levels seem to be full of voids where you just drag your ship through it and the clicky-clicky to make bullets meet enemies looks a bit excessive.
I also think those kind of games always look a bit trivial when you're watching someone that knows what they are doing play rather than breaking your brains yourself, so the short videos might be misrepresenting it.

Nevertheless I think calling this a shmup is a stretch and not really a small one.

Yeah, I think that is the main issue. It really is not a shmup anymore, dispite looking like one of the surface.
People who like TBS games might like this, but even then this does not look very deep as far as tactics go, but you might be right that the videos might not be representative.

For people who like shmups but are not into TBS games, like me, I doubt this will be fun at all.

I met the dev and had a brief go at a recent-ish event. Not enough to praise it or maul it, but 'interesting' was the word, and I'll give anything that toys with the conventions of the genre some open-minded time.

Certainly, though, any thrill it would deliver is likely very different from the typical thrills that so reward players who enjoy traditional shmups.

I think it's better as a conceptual experiment and not so much looked at as say a competitor to traditional shmups. It really brings up what's good and bad about indies: new ideas, but not necessarily the best time for anyone. I am eager to try it, but only to see what the experiment produces not so much for the adrenaline rush. Btw astebreed got an English trailer today: http://youtu.be/vYsfyMut3TE

You should see the turn-based tactics Earth Defense Force game for the PS2.
