X68000 Monitor continuous vertical scrolling on MSX RGB
I finally got a beautiful clear RGB picture out of my MSX on my X68000 monitor. The problem is, I can't get the picture to stop scrolling. The video here I took shows about the slowest rate I can get it to scroll at. Messing with any of the controls on the outside of the monitor does nothing to help. I don't have this problem on Composite input, TV, or my X68000 XVI either. Does anyone have any idea on what the culprit could be? Is it a matter of adjusting some pots on the inside of the monitor itself?
I am using a cable that takes the 15 pin input on the monitor and converts it to a 21 pin RGB female. Unfortunately I have no other machines here other than my MSX, so I'm not sure this would be happening on another system using the RGB 21 Pin input.
I have to get this working! After seeing the RGB picture, there is no way I can play using composite... Any help would be greatly appreciated!

My uneducated guess would be that the monitor needs RGBHV while the MSX does only output RGBs with composite sync in RGB mode. This would mean you need a sync processor/converter. Or do other RGBs sources work on this particular monitor ?

Re: X68000 Monitor continuous vertical scrolling on MSX RGB
I have no other consoles to test personally on my monitor, but I have read about lots of different systems that will run on this monitor. Super Famicom, Playstation, Saturn, Neo Geo, anything really.
The MSX only outputs a composite sync, but the cable I have that connects the 15 pin input from the X68000 monitor and gives me a female RGB 21 Pin lead has a LM1881 Sync Splitter inside of it. I'm assuming this is what you mean by the sync processor/converter, so I don't think this is the problem, but I'm not 100% sure this isn't the cause either.

From the pinout (the monitor uses the same pinout as the output on the X68k, right ?), I'd say you need a sync connection to pins 14 and 15. Usually LM1881 pin 1 to pin 14 and LM1881 pin 3 to pin 15. Note though that the LM1881 basically outputs C-Sync and V-Sync, no clean H-Sync signal.

Re: X68000 Monitor continuous vertical scrolling on MSX RGB
This cable that I purchased was specifically for the X68000 monitor to run RGB sources on it.
Here is the page for the auction and showing other sources running on the monitor.

Are you suggesting that it might need two seperate LM1881 IC chips in it?

That auction flat-out says "won't work for all computers" and the compatibility list does not include MSX. An XRGB in the middle will probably work though. An old XRGB-1 sells for almost nothing on yahoo, and you'd be using it in 15khz output mode, so you don't need any of the fancy features.

Alright, I thought it might, and MSX isn't as common as other systems, so I thought it might be omitted because of that. Is the XRGB-1 recommended only because of the price? Would any XRGB model probably work for this? I have thought about getting myself a Frame Meister in the past.

Well what are you trying to do here? Frame Meister outputs in HDMI so useless for an X68000 monitor. For connecting to an X68000 monitor, the XRGB-1, 2, and Selecty 21 are the simplest because they have D-SUB15 outputs, so you don't need to use an HDSUB-15 ("VGA plug") adapter.
The XRGB-1 and Selecty 21 are super simple, so they work great as a linking device. The XRGB-1 is a lot easier to find and cheaper too. Though I've heard Micomsoft is going to do yet another batch of Selecty21 soon as the demand is still there.

XRGB-1 or 2 will work. 2-Plus does not have a 15KHz mode. Not sure about the 3. Framemeister is for HDMI as mentioned.
XRGB-1 is the cheapest and easiest way to go probably. You could also try a XSYNC-1 if you have one lying around but I wouldn't
purchase one if you don't have one already, you can probably get a XRGB-1 for dirt cheap on YAJ.

2plus and 3 also have 15khz output. On the 2plus you have to enter a secret button code though and is very annoying, so not recommended.alamone wrote:XRGB-1 or 2 will work. 2-Plus does not have a 15KHz mode. Not sure about the 3. Framemeister is for HDMI as mentioned.

I am trying to play my consoles in RGB using the X68000 monitor as the display. In particular I want to get my MSX up and running on it. I actually knew that about the HDMI only output on the Frame Meister, I wasn't thinking when I posted that this morning!
1. It seems like the XRGB-1, 2, 3, or the Selecty 21 would all accomplish this?
2. The output for the D-SUB15 would definately work on the X68000 monitor? I recall that the NEC series of computers had a different pinout from the X68000 monitors?
Plan B would just be to break down, buy the Frame Meister and just play these systems on my HDTV.

NEC/Sharp pinout is interchangeable. FM Towns is the one you have to be careful of. The Micomsoft are NEC/Sharp pinout unless otherwise marked. (XRGB-1 and Selecty 21 have a dipswitch for proper Towns output). While I can't be 100% certain, as I don't even know what MSX you're using, but my XRGB-1 works fine with my Turbo-R.gatsu25 wrote:SuperDeadite wrote:Well what are you trying to do here? Another option if you have the space is to get a Sony Wega TV. They sell for nothing, and the majority of them have AV-Multi sockets, you can easily get a JP21->AV-Multi adapter. I have one of the HD-CRT Trinitrons and it takes my Turbo-R's RGB perfectly fine. Though the HD models lose the scanlines, so the standard SD Wega will look nicer.

Thanks again for the info. I'm using a Panasonic A1-WSX so I would assume that's about as close to the Turbo-R as you can get without being the Turbo-R. I guess I'll look out for an XRGB-1 or 2 then.
