Just wondering. That hurricane really fucked shit up... hope everyone here stayed out of harms way and their cabs didn't get submerged in the water.

Well, Shaper MC lives in Lousianna.
Things are pretty much FUCKED UP royaly over there!
South Texas just got a little bit o rain today...nothing major.
I was hoping things wouldn't get that bad, after all, they were expecting an "Apocolypse" of sorts...with thousands dead and floating in the streets, its still very bad indeed, but yet it could have been much worse!
What can I say really...?
I'm glad I don't live there.
People need to start pulling together and stop all the fucking looting!
We have had some serious hurricanes here in South TX, we just don't steal from each other when it happends.
Also, the fucking gas and oil companies need to stop taking advantage of the situation. They claim gas prises will rise, and are rising because of this event...GET OVER IT!!! Don't believe that bullshit.
Gas don't come from MadriGra(how ever the fuck you spell it?)

Word up, twitch.
Word. If the US was 3rd world, there would be thousands more dead. Less people aware, less escaping = more dead.
One guy on another forum had a cab located in Louisiana, and asked if it would still work if it was submerged under water. In actuality, if I escaped and survived, I'd try to have a relatively normal life, which includes internet. Besides, as one could gather from responses, people know people that know people on this forum and whatnot.Nemo wrote:And I'm sure one of their top priorities would be to see what's going on in the world of shmups. You're definitely in the minority then...events like this tend to bring out both the best and the worst in people. I've heard of people stabbing each other over bags of ice, and thousands of cops and such actually being pulled away from relief efforts just to control all the looting...whenever the normal "boundaries" around people in general are removed, stuff like this is going to happen, that's just the way it is.TWITCHDOCTOR wrote:People need to start pulling together and stop all the fucking looting!

Supposedly the rise is at least partially due to the fact that a bunch of rigs out in the ocean (not on land) were nailed by the hurricane, and may take months to get working again...I don't know much about the industry or how much effect this sort of thing has on oil supplies, but I don't doubt for a second that at least some of the price rise is due to greed and not necessity. Actually, on the radio talk show that I use as my clock alarm this morning, one caller mentioned that on a certain stretch of highway there were a few gas stations that still had prices around 2.60 or so, rather than the 3.00 and up that's spreading; however, they were waving people away from getting any gas. The reason? By state law gas stations can only adjust their prices once every 24 hours; until that time limit has passed, they weren't selling gas at anything resembling a discount. Classy. Then again, some other stations have simply been ignoring the 24-hour limit flat out. Also, the fucking gas and oil companies need to stop taking advantage of the situation. They claim gas prises will rise, and are rising because of this event...GET OVER IT!!! Don't believe that bullshit.

In any event, I certainly hope that the relatives of anyone here at this forum who live down that way are alright...
Good news: ShaperMC is fine, even if i don't know the entire details of the situation. In case you want to know more, please check on the gamersquarter forum. Hope everything will go for the best, of course.

Texas has not been hit by anything remotely as devestating as this. The flood that this created is the problem. With flood comes disease and pollution, lack of electricity, probably busted gaslines, no road access.TWITCHDOCTOR wrote: People need to start pulling together and stop all the fucking looting!

Imagine being in a lake as far as your eyes could see, not having food, in the blistering hot sun, dehydrated, and scared. Then you spot a closed supermarket. Don't tell me you aren't going to try and get some food out of it.
I don't condone the looting. But I think there is a definite line between looting for survival (food) versus the fucknuts that are trying to loot TVs and electronics. Most are just trying to survive. They don't even have clean drinking water.

Stealing food is pretty much "survival". I realize that these people can't simply go to a bank and cash their paychecks...let alone go to a grocery store and buy food. Its the other people who are stealing TV's ect. I mean c'mon, who's going to buy a mud soaked TV!?
Yea, yea, people there are desperate now, but if lawlessness would help, then the army would be handing out guns instead of "aid".
Texas never (that I know of) had a hurricane as bad as this one. Although there have been at least a couple "mandatory evacs". Still, even though, things never really got out of hand.
I really don't know what else to say about this tragety other than it ain't going away for a long time. There are more people "homeless" now than ever before. The Astro Dome (Houston Texas) will become a shelter for thousands, so I hear on the news.
Oh well, I'm out of this topic...

But there's some fucked up rule where some people can't get in... it's complete BS. I think if you evacuated BEFORE the hurricane came, you can't get in the Astro Dome...regardless of whether you have a home or not.he Astro Dome (Houston Texas) will become a shelter for thousands, so I hear on the news.

IIRC the original plan was pretty much to transplant those from the Superdome into the Astrodome; I don't think they'd have much room for any more people, though I believe they've allowed a few extras in there...in any event, there just aren't enough supplies or manpower to handle all the people who need aid down there, and it's making everyone very restless...according to an article I read relief workers have had to deal with fires and gunshots from the displaced, and have had to suspend some of their work...
That was my point.Twitch wrote:Stealing food is pretty much "survival". I realize that these people can't simply go to a bank and cash their paychecks...let alone go to a grocery store and buy food. Its the other people who are stealing TV's ect. I mean c'mon, who's going to buy a mud soaked TV!?
Stealing food and clothing to survive at this point is almost required. Stealing TVs is not and I hope those who are doing that die. It sounds bad, but they are the ones that are really making this harder for everyone. They are probably also the same people that are randomly shooting people.
There are people taking pot shots with rifles at the medics who are bringing in aid. *WHY* would you do this? Those people are fucking stupid. That's not a matter of survival, that's a matter of commiting crime for the sake of commiting crime.
I can't wait until the military gets there and starts killing those fucks (the shooters).

I'd guess that it's at least in part because the aid workers and such can only help so many people; if someone with a gun isn't getting help, he might figure that he can use it to get some. Senseless? Yes. Cruel? Yes. Selfish? Certainly. But it's partially out of deperation and panic that these sorts of people act, and when people are desperate and panicked they do senseless, cruel and selfish things, unfortunately.landshark wrote:There are people taking pot shots with rifles at the medics who are bringing in aid. *WHY* would you do this?
I was actually planning on moving home this upcoming january. My town is only about 100 miles above N.O., though. I'm not sure what all this means for my home. Will the crime rate of my small town suddenly become unbearable due to all of the homeless drifting in? What about jobs? There already wasn't enough in my town... I guess i might be stuck here in Az for awhile. Well, it could be worse - i could be stuck in New Orleans.
I can't believe this has happened. I've been to N.O. hundreds of times with my friends and family. I used to go to the IMAX and the Aquarium all the time. I even saw Jerry Cantrell there a few years ago at the house of blues. Now it's all demolished and gone.
I didn't realize the extent of the devastation until last night. I was reading USA Today and saw some of the photos. Can't believe it.

i'd say its young stupid people who stole rifles from wal-marts doing it for a laugh because its a chance to live the idolized thug life they see in movies music and games.
*edit* actually maybe not that harsh.. but probably along the lines of why kids throw rocks at windows etc...
I'd put my vote for this too. I still think it's for the sake of crime.kemical wrote: i'd say its young stupid people who stole rifles from wal-marts doing it for a laugh because its a chance to live the idolized thug life they see in movies music and games.

I just hope we don't start hearing from some people that this hurricane was punishment from God for whatever sin N.O. was into. That is never the truth. The hurricane would have hit regardless if the city was there or not.
But whoever dares to say that is getting a smack on the face, courtesy of yours truly.

Yea, I agree...I'm sure most people have heard about the "New Testament" VS. Old Testament= The Flood.Specineff wrote:I just hope we don't start hearing from some people that this hurricane was punishment from God for whatever sin N.O. was into. That is never the truth. If not, I suggest the above reading material.
Too late. I can't find the link (I found it on fark.com earlier today) - but some religious extremist in the southern US is already relating it to some city in Louisiana commiting a terrible sin by hosting some gay festival thing? I don't remember 100% what the article said, but that's the gist of it.Specineff wrote:I just hope we don't start hearing from some people that this hurricane was punishment from God for whatever sin N.O. was into. In most cases there is no internal mental constraint. It is the presence of a law or the fear of behaving in a way unaccepted by others that prevents people from acting out on whatever impulse presents itself. Most people go through life fine because they have never been tried (i.e. been in situations where they would tip).BulletMagnet wrote:You're definitely in the minority then...events like this tend to bring out both the best and the worst in people.
