How tough are your consoles?

After my SNES seemed to survive an surge attack due to water being in it, I wonder if any consoles or handhelds of yours cheated death or simply took a lickin' but still kept on tickin'. Bonus points to anyone that's had a CD-based machine go thru some abuse and lived to game another day, because those things are fragile by nature.

Here's another interesting question: Can an Xbox or a cart-based Nintendo system survive a sledgehammer hit?

Many years ago, my n64 was submerged underwater for several days. Afterwards, I let it dry out and it still works fine to this day.

Not a console, but the other day my kid wanted to see what would happen if it 'rained' on his CD player, so he stealthed into the bathroom with a cup, scooped up some toilet water, opened the lid and poured it directly into the player while it was turned on. Totally cooked it. I've been having horrible visions of him 'raining' on my DC.

Water entered in a PS1 system of a friend of mine. He let a bottle of water fall, and the water got inside the PSX, through the CD part, with the CD door OPEN.

The 1st thing he did was turn on the system to test it. It powered up normally, but it wasnt reading any CD. He turned it off, waited 2 days, and turned it on again. TADA - working as before.

I had a PC keyboard which had fallen in the ground too many times, many different substances fell on it (Coke, Chocolate, Ice-Cream, Orange juice), it was once THROWN with RAGE against a wall and ALL THE KEYS (ALL OF THEM) fell of the keyboard, and I had to put all them back..

And this keyboard survived to all of this. I had this keyboard for 8 years... yesterday I was using the PC and suddenly the keys were reacting all wrong. Today in the morning I tested it, and most of the keys werent working, and both W and SHIFT were being registered even though I wasn't pressing them.

It nearly droped me a tear. This keyboard had been with me since my 1st PC, I was 3 times faster typing on it than in any other keyboard... it had a perfect fit for my hands... this keyboard went through a lot of shit, was trasnported to many different places.... At least I guess he had a calm, quiet death. It wasnt for the drops, nor for the attack of substances... it just stopped working suddenly...

I actidentially dropped my GBC more than once and my regular GBA a few times and they both still work great.

I accidentally stomped on my GBA, and it still works flawlessly [And this is coming from a guy that's 210 lbs]

The same happened with me. I threw it in a pool for a week dried it out and it still worked. Craziness.

Also i dropped my gamecube one time in the kitchen on the hard tile and the door popped off the top the bottom piece popped off.I popped both back into place booted up resident evil 4 and it still works great to this day.

Yeah I got that...but what's the difference between an adult spilling a bottle of water into a PS1 and my 3 year old pouring as much into a CD player? The player had an isolated power supply anyway...5V isn't going to electrocute anybody.

I've never accidently dropped anything on any of my consoles or other items.

Only my PC

These are intenational acts of rage lol

1. I've punched the computer keyboard and some of the keys came off
2. Knocked my computer moniter and everything else down the stairs
3. opened the computer case up and start kicking the the crap out of it.

I haven't got the desktop anymore lol

I swore I'd never touch my laptop(the one I'm using now) but lately I have been pounding into the keys

I think I need to go to some form of anger managment

My SNES was abused very much, with me first and my two much younger siblings a decade later. We had a concrete floor in our basement, and somehow it kept falling off the desk it was on. So basically the whole back of the system is ripped off and there's a big crack running down the middile of the case. Somehow it still works fine. That was a durable system, for sure.

I've dropped my original Game Boy down the stairs countless times (probably bordering on 20 or so), and the poor abused thing still works perfectly. Of course, as of late it rarely sees the light of day, but still...

Dropped my Gamecube a couple times and it still works just fine-not even a disc read error unless the disc itself has dust or scratches on it.

And although this isn't MY SNES per se, my friend's brother drop-kicked my friend's SNES one time when he was REALLY pissed at him. (His brother is hyperactive, so that's a bad combination) Despite being booted and sailing through the air with a rather sudden landing on concrete in their basement, the thing still works perfectly. Needless to say, Nintendo makes solid products.

Although I can't really comment because my Genesis, Dreamcast, PSX, and PS2 haven't really recieved anything along the lines of harm. Lucky them, I guess.

i dropped my gbc color all the time and it worked fine until it finally broke by getting sat on (thanks cuz ^_^).

and of course my genesis and snes have fallen off their perches uncountable times and work perfectly.

also, i stepped on my ds but it didn't like it. had to get the top screen replaced.

Water isn't so much an issue if power isn't running through the system at the time, and if its not exposed so much that it causes corrosion.

But in line with the thread, when I was little I used to fuuuuuck up my Gameboy. Dropped it on concrete all the time, I still have it and it still works, though there is a permanent line running down the side, and it smells funny.

Actually 5 volts or any house voltage really means nothing when it comes to electrocuting people.

The thing that kills is AMPs only take 3 or less iirc across the human heart to stop it.

Voltage is the speed of electrons current is the rate of flow of charge measured in amps.

The actual flow rate kills. 50,000 volts is a different story, it will you for different reasons.

Sorry if that annoys any one.

Back on topic: Yeah my Megadrive and mega CD combo must be 15 years old works great, played easilly thousands of hours on that thing and the memory works great to this day.

My homemade dreamcast: 6 years old for some parts and oxide build up hasn't been an issue.

My Playstation survived having a can of Caffrey's poured on it. My Megadrive and Dreamcast are in pretty bad shape though - probably due to me not storing them very well.

Heh, I figured somebody would bring that up. I believe it's about 2 amps to kill. What I should've said is, 5 volts at ~100 milliamps

I'd guess that most of my consoles have suffered some form of misadventure or other over the years. The one that immediately springs to mind was a work collegue spilling water inside my Playstation. I'd (foolishly) taken it to work to educate my ape-like bretheren in the ways of Pro evo Footy. Sadly, ape#1's inability to manouvre his fork of lasagne into his mouth without spilling it INTO my PS directly led to ape#2's einstein-esque idea that mopping it up with a WET cloth was the most effective method of rectifing the situation.
Just a recap then. Thats WET cloth INSIDE my PS. Genius.

I've never really let any of my systems get into precarious sitautions (ok I dropped my Genesis once, it survived), I've had my NES going on 17 years and although it doesn't work as well as it used to, it amazingly has held up under the test of time. Same goes for my SNES, still works pretty well, but I haven't played it in about a year, so I'd have to test it again soon to see if it still is in working condition.

My Saturn took a rather sharp fall in the back of the U-Haul truck while I was moving from Vegas. The CD door was detached, which was a quick fix. Still works.

Can't say the same for my PS2 from a few years ago. I kicked the damn thing because it wouldn't read any DVDs, and it stopped recognizing discs altogether.
