iCade

Post by eatdogs »

Saw this nifty little thing on classic game room. Mark was using it to play some ios shmups. Mark seems like a cool guy. He's introduced me to several shmups I've never seen before. He got me interested in Donpachi and Dodonpachi, Truxton, radiant Silvergun and even Herzog Zwei.

Yeah, so anyone here use the iCade? I wonder if they make one for Android?

Now that's awesome right there. Reminds me of those old mini arcade cabinet boxes you could get back in the late 80's to play in your home. Sort of like early game boys.

Unfortunately no, a lot of IOS games are not Bluetooth compatible

I understand that when jail broken you can use an app that makes every game work .

Mine is not though .

I got one too real cheap. I think they are discontinued? I got the limited edition that looks like the ThinkGeek aprils fool one.

Ordered some new parts as the stock buttons are stiff as hell.

I have one too. They are brilliant if you jailbreak your iCade, then you can not only play all the supported iOS games with it but also all the emulators (I have MAME, pc engine, atari 2600, Nes, Genesis, Final Burn etc installed on mine).

This thing needs some kind of analog input so I can play things like Pole Position Remix on it. Though I'm not sure if the app Casey is talking about works for any of the Namco stuff; I know nothing Namco makes supports the iCade, at least. I also don't have an iDevice, so...

Btw - it also works for android tablets (most of them, anyway). MAME (MAME4Droid) and the various emulators are available on Android too.

Yeah, I've had an iCade for a couple years now. I modded it to use a Sanwa joystick and changed the switches on the buttons to Cherrys to make the buttons a little more responsive, made all the difference. If you want to use Sanwa buttons, you'll have to dremel the holes larger, as they are a little smaller than 30mm (these are basically Happ/IL style buttons).

Focusattack sells a Sanwa JLF with no mounting plate here, perfect for the iCade:
http://www.focusattack.com/sanwa-jlf-tp ... installed/

If you jailbreak your iPad, you can use an app called Blutrol to use the iCade with any game. It doesn't work well with games that use your finger to move (basically all Cave games unfortunately), but with games with on-screen controls, its not a problem to map it.

Here's a starter list on TouchArcade that have built-in iCade functionality:
http://toucharcade.com/icade/

Cydia link for Blutrol (not working in iOS7 yet):
http://www.ringwald.ch/cydia/blutrol/

If you want to use a PS3 controller instead of an iCade (where's the fun in that?):

If you want to use a PS3/PS4 controller as an MFi controller:
http://itechnow.com/how-to-play-ios-7-m ... er-videos/

There's also a non-cabinet version of the iCade that works the same, easily trasnportable, if you want an arcade stick style of controller. I put the iPad on a separate stand to play this way.

It's a fun little novelty and gets as much action as my regular arcade cab on my game nights when friends come over.

I found some new style buttons on ultimarc.com called goldleaf buttons. They look like classic happ concave buttons but they have an internal microswitch like seimitsu and sanwa buttons. They activate in the same way as those as well and dont have the cherry switch click sound. They feel a lot like seimitsu buttons.

i can also recommend iFBA (final burn alpha) it plays the newer cave stuff like ketsui and ddpdoj and it has a follow finger mode for those games like the original cave ios games. I think someone posted it on here somewhere.

I added sanwa buttons and sanwa stick to an Icade that I no longer own. I gave it to my brother-in-law. I used sandpaper to widen the holes for the buttons. I found the whole thing to feel kind of cramped.

I also have one of this and I am not very happy with the feeling of buttons. Also, some slag detected playing with mame4all (official downloaded from Apple Store).
I think that I have seen some of these converted to pinball?

Too bad about the cave games. They spent so much time porting them, but left out adding controls to their mobile ports. Really disappointing. I feel touch based controls totally ruins a shmup for me. Unless the shmup was designed for touch based controls, touch control makes the game too easy.
