Freespace 2 was the last great mission based flightstick space-sim before game developers worldwide suffered a collective brain aneurism and decided the REALLY cool thing about flying a space ship is mining asteroids.

The Source Code Project lives on, and they just recently released an even more advanced version of the MediaVPs, in other words higher-poly ships, niftier special effects, and just an overall more beautiful game running on a stable SSE-enabled engine.

Descent 4.

Descent 3 was a blast, and one of the very few western PC games I devoted a lot of love to... and that was on dialup. There's still a community playing it though.

X is more about trading and space combat combined, Freespace 2 is all combat all the time.

FS2 has some awesome mods, but the SCP stuff is a bit hard to install because the Hard-Light folks don't have an installer set up yet (it's a priority right now). There is a mod called Dimensional Eclipse with the Vic Viper as a playable craft, if you can stand the moe anime stuff that's also present. Also, there are 2 standalone games that use the FS2 engine: Diaspora (based off Battlestar Galactica) and Wing Commander Saga. Both are completely free and well worth a play (WCS does have one particularly hard mission though, you can skip it if it gets frustrating)

Imagine you've started a game of X, or Eve Online, or whatever. You're mining asteroids and trading futuristic manure, and doing all the boring busywork that starts such games and you entertain yourself by daydreaming about the incredible space battles you'll one day engage in when you can afford a combat-capable ship.

In Freespace 2, taxpayers are paying for your ships and their payloads, so you get those incredible space battles from the very first mission, no sock-shitting grind required!

TIE Fighter was a fantastic game in every respect, but I can say without reservation that Freespace 2 is better in every single way (except fanservice).

No other space sim since has managed to capture the Catch-22 levels of chaos as you weave your way through a net of exploding flak while GIGANTIC capital ships carve each other into pieces with beam weapons. It was so sad seeing Strike Suit Zero try to re-create the magic and fall flat on its face.

But not only was the engine and the ship design fantastic, the mission design was the best in the genre. While TIE Fighter would try to spice things up with absurd situations like sending you to dogfight A-Wings in a TIE bomber, or launching a cruiser-assault mission where all the heavy torpedoes are loaded onto a single storm trooper transport, Freespace 2 was constantly coming up with exciting and complex missions the entire campaign. Descent: Freespace (aka the first game) is out on Steam. Plus Silent Threat expansion too from what I heard.


It won't be long until FS2 make it to Steam as well.
