There's some video going around the Internets apparently of a guy going around a beach in California with a Geiger counter and it's going off. Heard a report on the radio today that the radiation level in the SF bay suddenly spiked 500%.

I haven't watched or anything, as video's are blocked at my work.

Maybe some of that water is finally hitting the west coast of north america?

I don't know about marine currents but there was a huge spike in radiation on Hawaii's west coast last year by the end of october.
Chinese observers said a 'pocket' of polluted water was actually travelling on an almost straight west>east course towards the american coast.
If that's true then it would make sense that it has reached by now.

Anyway, if they ever drop one of those combustible bars they're removing from the Pool of Hell as we write, contaminated water will be the least of our worries.
I'm glad I'm living 10,000Km away from this shit, but the pool has 15,000 times the radiation potential Chernobyl had, so there will be nowhere to hide.

@Ed: Yes that's it. Insane.
Well the soviets didn't pay much the hordes of guys who went to certain death in Chernobyl (and nothing but medals for the soldiers of course) but at least they did the dirty job.
I remember a number of Japanese people volunteered to sacrifice their lives - but nope, Japan chose Tepco and the yakuza over heroes.
I am appalled to see Japan authorities almost just standing there behaving as if it was just your average industrial accident with no further consequences when radioactive shit is still gushing out from every hole with pending potential planetary-scale catastrophe.
If Tepco screw up in the end and this whole mess turns into a total nightmare, humanity will hate Japan as much as they hated Germany's nazis and Russia's commies... for hundreds of thousands of years.

Oh no, a couple cubic km of radiated water in a 660,000,000 cubic km ocean. What a big problem

It's a relatively large problem to Japan, it's not even a small problem anywhere else.

I'm of this mindset. What I worry about now is a genuine real disaster looming, but my BS detector has been set so high by all the conspiracy/doom-mongers that I'll miss all the warning signs.

Edit: Regardless, great title for this thread. Thumbs up!

All these people talking about Californians getting exposure sickness are out of their fucking minds. Japanese, on the whole, are far more paranoid than anyone in the west... and many now own Geiger counters. If SF's radiation levels spiked 500% b/c of Fukushima, Tokyo would be full of people panicking... not lining up hours for popcorn.

I don't doubt something is amiss surrounding the reactor, but I don't think it's quite to The Shittening level.

I was brushing up on the brown recluse spider the other day and I came across an article by a university in CA that was trying to debunk a statewide panic that someone somewhere had found what they thought was one of these critters. Of course it had made news all over CA and caused a huge panic.

Sorry to interrupt the shittening, but I wanted to contribute to the Californication.

I don't even know what that is GP, but it made me laugh. About my expression regarding all the dumb shit I read on the internet. Sure, this is the age of mass communication, no longer the atomic age, but it is also the age of shit heads.

Somehow it is all blocked in the fucking USA, but found some clips here: http://www.nbc.com/saturday-night-live/ ... on/n13484/

The dumb part of it is an LA resident, even if the accents are horse shit, the non-stop obsession with street directions is dead on.

It would be so convenient if water was immediately diluted - evenly - in the whole Pacific.
Unfortunately it doesn't seem to work this way, because of currents and temperature 'pockets' of polluted waters can gather in specific areas.
As for the west coast it's Alaska and Canada that seem to be the most exposed to this threat (Alaska whirl current).

As for exaggeration and conspiracy theories, I'm not saying there's no bullshit mixed in all we can read about this but one certain thing about nuclear messups is that you cannot trust official statements.
In Europe it took quite some time to sort facts from lies after Chernobyl, but it is now a thing of the past... at least for people who don't live in highly contaminated areas.
Millions of people were manipulated in believing there was no danger where they lived and its not always thanks to governments and institutions that dangerously contaminated areas were spotted, some, several thousand of kilometers away from the actual plant.

Now I never understood on what grounds people who are always here to say "That's bullshit don't believe what you read you pussies there's no danger" base their statements.
I'd like to see their expressions the day it happens to them or their families - even though I don't wish that to anyone.
Happy people in Belarus learned to use Geiger counters - at least those who can afford one - to check on the areas where their kids play or their cattle dwell, or simply what they eat and drink every day.
Go there and tell them not to worry.

The Pacific ocean is f- huge okay, but you just have to swallow the wrong fish or the wrong drop of salty water or sand while having fun at the beach on the wrong day.
A single microscopic radioactive dust can mess-up your organism for good and you will know only the day symptoms appear, when it's too late.

Bullshit ?
From what I understand the Japanese authorities would like to see people returning to live in some currently excluded areas as quickly as possible, but decontamination is a pharaonic task.
Now if they just cheat a bit on the figures there will be much less work to do.
Japan, as all big nuclear powers have been leading research on the effects of radioactivity on the environment and populations, IIRC they even used to finance a research program in Ukraine.
All I'm saying is the individuals - politics or private - in control of everything nukes are perfectly aware of the dangers and can very well manipulate millions of people people if it serves their interests.
By the time people realize there are too many cancers and the place's not safe to live several administrations and companies will have moved on.
That's no f- conspiracy theory from tabloids, that's experience, for much too many people in history already.
It's a laughing matter only for people who don't suspect anything and live in disney world.

And so it wouldn't be too farfetched to assume the Tokyo Olympics in 2020 is a way of pressuring Japan to clean it up.
If not, well... at least we'll get to watch Kaneda and Tetsuo fight it out again.

Yeah, that's definitely the essence. "If not there's a coffee bean across the street that validates..."
Haha.

I know it works that way for normal pollutants, a la that gigantic pocket of shit in the Pacific. But, what about for heavy elements, like Cesium? As I understand it, Cesium doesn't travel so well in the water (or even air), which means the top soil in the surrounding area is fucked.

If you want to use that logic, nobody should ever eat bananas ever because they're slightly radioactive, right?
Sorry, pick up a physics textbook.

I think Turkey had it in the bag until that bullshit over the summer. Anyway, Japan won by default. If China can host despite being a human rights disaster, and Russia can host with it's seriously fucked up gay rights slamming, then Japan can with it's nuclear woes.

The GF finally watched Akira for the first time recently. Definitely interesting watching the future, from a movie in the past about a possible future.

Compare what can be compared, I'm talking about radioactive dust that can be inhaled or ingested.
Sorry, read about contamination by radioactive isotopes.

Even if to be rational for most people living far away the risk of dying in a car accident or choking with a pretzel are much higher, the problem is as it is the case with many pollutants the dangerous stuff will gather in specific places or even fix themselves to certain organisms.

The role of any government and institutions should be to locate those and draw precise maps / lists of affected regions and organisms and make them public.

I wouldn't dream of it but seriously, when it's oil they spend billions for the cleanup, financed by both public and private funds.
Now it's radioactive waste and... "Don't worry guys it's safe!" - nothing.
