hey there Taito are still around, but barely - they just released mushihimesama.
square enix is putting in a bid to take over taito however, so god only knows how things might change in the future - below is some info ripped straight off the web.

seems like a lot of money to pay if you ask me. is classic IP like space invaders really worth so much anymore?

----
August 22, 2005 - Square Enix announced today the start of a stock purchase program through which it hopes to turn Taito, the maker of Space Invaders, into a wholly-owned subsidiary.

To reach its purchase goal, Square Enix will need to get its hands on at least 247,000 shares of Taito stock, giving it a 67% hold over the company. The company plans on paying 181,100 yen per share, which it states is a premium of 20% over the average price of Taito stock over the six months ending on 8/19. The total cost of the stock purchase is expected to come to 45.16 billion yen.

If Square Enix is able to reach agreements with Taito shareholders to purchase at least 67% of shares, it will go through with the purchase. With the 67% stock in its hand, it will then begin the procedures required to make Taito into a wholly-owned subsidiary, including a stock swap. If, however, Square Enix is unable to reach agreements for the required 247,900 shares, it will not go through with the purchase of any of the shares, even those for which it has managed to reach agreements. The company has set a limit of 30 days, starting 8/23 and continuing to 9/21, for the deal to complete.

Square Enix has already managed to reach an agreement with Taito's primary stock holder Kyocera to purchase its 36% stake. In addition, the company reveals that the move towards purchase has been received favorably by the Taito board. Together with Kyocera, Square Enix plans on working towards making the purchase a reality.

In press statements released today, Square Enix and Taito commented on this surprise deal. Square Enix revealed that its interests are in Taito's strengths in amusement facilities and content distribution, both domestic and international. Taito added that the two companies don't have much overlap in their respective game genres, giving the pairing a "maximal synergy effect."

Do you think a new Darius game is a possibility? An overhead/vertical Darius game would be cool. :o
