Which shmups do you think really need a sequel?
Which shmups do you think really need a sequel?
And I'd like the answers to only be based on the games, not the companies, the time when they were made, ratings, consoles...etc
Just the games themselves.
Call me crazy, but I think Zero Wing needs a sequel that actually makes it a serious game (not that the shooting part wasn't serious).

Re: Which shmups do you think really need a sequel?
For a series? I'd love to see Thunder Force VII myself, to make up for Thunder Force VI. There are still good ideas you can make with the series' core mechanics (multiple cool weapons, stages, bosses, etc).
As a one-off? That has me thinking more of Border Down or Under Defeat. Both are good games that I think could be refined to make them better - like giving Under Defeat a more engaging scoring system, and adding some more variety to Border Down. And that the mechanics are good enough that I would like to revisit them in new and exciting locales.

Deathsmiles. If Cave took everything that was great about DS, DSMBL, and DS2 and put all of it into a single game, DS3 would be one of the best shumps ever created. But of course that's never going to happen, since they'd need at least a year or two to develop and fine-tune such a big project.

You might be right about Hyper Duel, but I do think it would be interesting to see something like The Guardian Legend pulled off with more "modern" design (all the concepts and advances in shmup design since the Compile Nes days).GradiusuiraD wrote: I think the guardian legend and hyper duel just dont invoke a sequel somehow...they just feels complete on their own

Re: Which shmups do you think really need a sequel?
Raiden DX, Ketsui, Strikers 1999, Raiden IV, Air Gallet, Raiden Fighters Jet, Ashura Blaster, Gun Frontier, Batrider
Raiden DX: This one is a no-brainer. WHY HASN'T ANY OTHER RAIDEN GAME FOLLOWED IN THE LEGACY OF THE BEST RAIDEN GAME EVER CREATED AND ADDED MULTIPLE COURSES (RAIDEN FIGHTERS JET DOES NOT COUNT), AND COMPLEX SECRETS SUCH AS SOL TOWERS AND GOLD PYRAMIDS (YES, I AM AWARE RAIDEN IV HAD SOL TOWERS, BUT 1 PER STAGE, COME ON, YOU CAN DO BETTER THAN THAT, AND WHERE DID THE GOLD PYRAMIDS GO!?) AS WELL AS A FLASHING MEDAL SYSTEM AND RANKINGS BASED ON ENEMIES DESTROYED, GUTS, ETC. *facepalm* And don't forget the awesome music too.
Ketsui: Another no-brainer. Why hasn't CAVE's best game received a sequel yet? Non-complicated scoring mechanics, a dark storyline and atmosphere, and brutal gameplay just call out for a sequel. This would be potential for CAVE to unleash their most savage True Last Boss ever seen.
Strikers 1999: It's been too long since we've had a new Strikers game. Strikers IV would be awesome, just look at the tons of new real-world jets that have been produced, just ripe for the picking, and it needs more transforming mecha-fighter action. Don't forget the transition to HD graphics, yet keep it simple Psikyo style bullet hell, with a savage second loop and insane final boss.
Raiden IV: It's been 6 years, about to be 7, since Raiden IV was released. Another 11 year wait like in between Raiden DX and Raiden III would be absolute torture. Hopefully Raiden IV Overkill will be enough to satisfy me until Raiden V. Also, the chance to hear more amazing music tracks by Go Sato would be a dream come true.
Air Gallet: We need a sequel that improves on the frantic gameplay of the original, and also get rid of that useless piece of shit Hunter weapon.
Raiden Fighters Jet: Raiden Fighters IV would seriously be one bad-ass game. This would be their opportunity to bring the Fighters series into HD graphics, while keeping the same intense, fast-paced gameplay, medal chaining, and other miscellaneous secrets. The roster of playable aircraft should also be expanded with more original, exotic designs, and weaponry. Finally, fix that godawful abomination of a soundtrack that RF Jet had, and add some more heart-pounding, heavy bass techno, and drum and bass.
Ashura Blaster: Although this game is extremely obscure and is considered a rip-off of Twin Cobra by many, a sequel would be amazing if more original elements were added, while keeping the same raw, intense atmosphere of the original. Reducing the hitbox size, and increasing the helicopter's speed a bit would help, and so would adding new weapons. Finally, don't forget the best part of the game, the music. Ashura Blaster's soundtrack is only rivaled by Gun Frontier's; I CRAVE more melancholy sounding tracks like that.
Gun Frontier: A shooter with such a unique aesthetic design as this deserves a sequel. I mean come on, gun-shaped fighter planes, old west styled enemies and locations, this is pure gold (no pun intended). Maybe beef up the scoring system a bit, increase player speed, and add new weapons. Not to mention that it MUST have an excellent soundtrack, just as melancholy as the first. (Although it will be hard to top that indeed.)
Batrider: On second thought, I don't think Raizing's best shooter can be topped by a sequel.

I know it's called Project Gun Frontier 2, but clearly there is no connection story-wise between the two apart from the fact that the same team worked on it.trap15 wrote:They already did. It's called Metal Black.Emo Fox Jet Pilot wrote:Gun Frontier

Are you referring to the fact that during early development, the Wild Lizards enemies from Gun Frontier were originally intended to be the antagonists of Metal Black also?trap15 wrote:Oh but there are. You'll have to figure them out, but they're definitely there
Re: Which shmups do you think really need a sequel?
Nope. You'll have to figure it out yourself as I haven't yet figured it out enough with enough solid connections to talk about my theories. I do want to write out the connections of Gun Frontier, Metal Black, and Dino Rex; they definitely do share a common universe at the very least, but I believe they have even more story connection than just that.

It would have been excessively hilarious if the 'nosing out the gold space thieves' Wild Lizads were the cause of all the devastation in Metal Black's universe.
