Outsourcing

Post by Obiwanshinobi »

Seems to be a necessity for the Japanese copyright holders nowadays (too expensive and not competitive enough to develop domestically), but with the just announced Hyrule Warriors (see the gameplay trailer), Nintendo decided to let Koei do the job.
I don't even mind the "retro" graphics, PROVIDED it'll be consistent 60 fps.

It's Koei, so probably not

Go back to making management sims Koei, you guys were really good at that.

Dynasty Warriors is (probably) cheaper to make and makes more money.

A little off topic here, but did anyone else think Yoshi's New Island has late SNES/N64 quality graphics with emulator filters? Looks like something from 1996, and looks kinda bad.

 Zelda musou. Sad thing is, it'll probably have the best combat the series has seen so far.

It looks fucking terrible.

It's also not off-topic, because it's another case of outsourcing. Made by the ashes of the now-defunct Artoon who made the DS Yoshi's Island (which was bad and ugly, but still looked better than this by a long shot).

It looks like an interesting concept, though understandably incomplete.

Now Wii U has got a chance to be a shelter for the kind of action TPP previous Nintendo platforms didn't really have*), but 60 fps is a must.
*)Okay, I sort of take it back. Even the original Xbox got Ninja Gaiden, Gunvalkyrie, Dynasty Warriors 4 and Crimson Sea, but then Wii got Metroid: Other M (outsourced, no less). On the 'Cube, though, PoP: Warrior Within and The Two Thrones were as close as I can think of (slightly depressing thought). Have yet to play Gotcha Force (by Atsushi Tomita of Gundam vs fame).

Gotcha Force is fucking amazing, though it does have serious balance issues.

It speaks volumes that Capcom released Japanese Gotcha Force re-print in the year 2012 (!!!) - possibly the latest print of any GameCube game on Earth. Then again, I think new 'Cube joypads over there were in demand pretty late in the day.

According to this link Tezuka is directing it, but a company called Arzest is the developer...according to Wikipedia it was founded by former Artoon staffers and has been around since 2010, though its list of works found on their official site seems to suggest that this project is a bit of a leap for them.

Hey Squaresoft did pretty well with Super Mario RPG

And I think the later Mario & Luigi games are an outside studio as well?

Wikipedia lists them as a "second-party subsidiary of Nintendo", for whatever that's worth.

Ah ok. I wonder if that's similar to Intelligent Systems then? Or HAL Labs?

Weren't they also responsible for developing the Gundam VS Series as well?

Also, HEXADRIVE who developed for EX TROOPERS and the good version of Zone of the Enders HD Edition.

It's disgusting. Resembles the CG cutscenes in the original SFC Yoshi Island - by far the ugliest part.

This isn't the first time a Nintendo property was in a Dynasty Warriors related game. Samurai Warriors 3 for Wii has modes and characters based on that Castle Murasame FDS game.

Not exactly. Try to remember the game over cinema. Yossi Island was originally pitched as a CG styled game like Donkey Kong Country and green-lit, but Miyamoto had another idea and successfully pitched the crayon look. Some of the cinema's were leftovers from the original go-ahead.

Why the heck they're deciding to go with the original abandoned idea for this is anyone's guess. A game that looked like the original Yoshi's Island, but in 3D, would be beautiful.

There was Oracle of Ages/Seasons before that, also by Capcom. As well as the original Four Swords (GBA).

The only real consolation I get from their recent work is that they're doing something with more of their IPs compared to let's say, Konami (which is all Metal Gear and PES in the global market).

Granted, the latter has other businesses such as sports (national sponsor too) and a range of other services, but most of their new entertainment (arcades especially) has not left Japan.

I went to Konami's gym for like 8 months or something. It was actually the best gym in that area and was priced just as horribly as most private gyms in Japan. All gyms will take at least two days off a month. Most businesses do -- sometimes once a week. They claim it's to give workers a day off, but whatever. Stupid. Anyway, Konami changed their 2 days off a month, to every Friday. WTF? I bailed, and told them why. So stupid.

My guess is that they want to encourage the "National" service subscriptions as each gym had different on/off schedules.
I had experience with both the Kyoto (Kawaramachi-dori) and Tokyo (Shibuya) gyms myself; pretty decent if too stuffy during winter season.

Though for similar reasons as yours, I switched to Tipness as they had more flexible service hours; it didn't last due to the 2011 Tohoku incident though.

Wasn't that partly due to the Microsoft's troublesome process needed to get a patch approved?
(Please do correct me on this speculation though; I'm not certain of this myself.)

yes, but it's still frustrating, just like their annoying patch process and policies that are keeping games from being updated. I like the 360 quite a bit, but MS's attitude towards developers and customers needs a massive overhaul. Also, the patch fee was supposedly removed, but it turned out to only be for Xbox ONE.
