Best horizontal series?

Post by Sugar Rush Games »

I know that verts are much more popular around these parts, but I was wondering what everyone considers to be the best horizontal series.

To me, it's R-Type, as I prefer its slower pace and atmoshpere. What does everyone else think?

I should also specify that in order to qualify as a series, there must be at least two entries into the franchise.

Yeah, I wanted to say something like "NMK horizontals", but guy wants a series. So I picked the first of theirs that came to mind, P47 :P

Probably Gradius, although I really, really enjoy Thunder Force, too.

I don't think so, unless we also want to say X Multiply is R-Type, Thunder Cross is Gradius, and Metal Black is Darius.

And Pilot Kids...

Sengoku Blade's starting look like the anomaly.

To hell with your "facts" - but Sol Divide is a beautiful thing anyway. Still, I want to say that there only was ever one Psikyo hori. (Pilot Kids - I haven't ever paid attention to this and only saw some footage just now...it looks kinda cute and interesting, even if it doesn't play well.)

But even if their success rate was only 1/3, shouldn't we have asked for three more Psikyo horis, just to be safe? Just so long as it didn't interfere with their verts or Gunbarich.

Oh, and Namco is...Ordyne and Insector-X? D:

It's hard to pick from among the best.
Thunder Force has the best weapons, Darius the best bosses, Gradius the best challenge, and R-Type the best level design.

Considering only the options in this poll:

1º - Gradius
2º - R-Type and Darius Series (draw)
3º - (Others)
4º - Thunder Force

Vote for Gradius since it's a series I've have had some time with, haven't really played R-type or Darius games (G-Darius is awesome tho) enough to have an opinion of them as series.
Thunder Force games are just bad.

K, this is messed. I'm have to choose between Gradius & Darius? ... I've played way more Gradius to know about it the most out of all shooter, but the amount of Darius playtime I've put in a very short time is insane.

Maybe I'll vote Darius since it be needing the love. Plus got to think open minded, as Darius series could cause an upset and outwin my shmup love away from Gradius? So... me be voting Darius. Plus it's all that's on my mind these days.
Aleksei wrote:Unreal, the small amount of Darius votes is shameful.
Yes, I've been saying this quite a bit on here on how low the Darius love here be... It's for sure better then R-Type in my books.

Thunderforce I still need to get into. Just did, but then Darius came a knocking and been cheating with Darius ever since. Plus Arcade/Arcade origin games are usually the better shmups from what I've so far seen so far...
R-Gray 1 wrote:raystor...... :? ,,,,,Gradius of course
Wait, your fave in that series is RayStorm? As in better the RayForce & RayCrisis? If so, please explain. Was it the HD 360 remake that sealed the deal for you? It be sweat for sure & I wish RayCrises gets one + at least one more level too boot. Feels so short... but RayCrisis still might be my second fave after RayForce at #1.

Hmm, I never knew Gradius would be this popular? I thought it was somewhat underapreciated too, save for the fact that it's name brand & dev's are very well known. Gradius & R-Type are like thee poster boys for shmups, period, after all. I knew of them like well before I even heard of the genre or played the games.

I also thought that R-Type was way more popular then Gradius too. Due to charge shots, seemingly way less Gradius syndrome, no repatative stary level intros for every level, less bullets to dodge, etc. Well, at least from the casual or super casual type, like the ones that maybe touch a shmup once in their lifetime or state save/credit feed (hello Konami Code abuse!) through them once in awhile for just their graphics and sounds it is. You know, cause, who in their right mind would want to abuse themselves with resarting every freakin time in a case of mad trial & error?

EDIT - looks like I better change my avatar too? It's just not cool, to be in with the in crowd.

Would Defender <> Stargate <> Strikeforce fall into this? If so that would be my vote.

I didn't expect Gradius to be winning by such a large margin; I always thought it was roughly equal in popularity to R-Type. The fact that Gradius V was MUCH better than R-Type Final certainly doesn't hurt the case for Gradius either.

Despite the dreaded "Gradius syndrome", I'd say Gradius games on the whole are easier than R-Type games. The games also have a faster, more upbeat style to them, which many people seem to prefer to R-Type's slower, gritty style.
