Magic based FPS?
Anyone remember those old games Heretic and Hexen? Has anyone played any other magic type FPS? I'm so sick of seeing generic military/futuristic FPS yet the magical kind have remained untouched since those two games came out, iirc.

Re: Magic based FPS?
Clive Barker's Undying has a strong focus on magic-based attacks and abilities.
The Catacomb Abyss is a magic/fantasy FPS that predates Wolfenstein 3D.

Exhumed?
Mystical Egyptian setting, though plenty of traditional weapons are involved it does have some magic elements.

It begins in deep space warped by evil power
Re: Magic based FPS?
Undying is the bee's knees. There was another Clive Barker related FPS that had some magic thrown in but I don't think it turned out very well.
Feedback will set you free.

Hell yeah, love Heretic and Hexen. There is also the two Witchaven games. Very similar in regards to Heretic/Hexen, although they control a bit funky. I dig, though.
As Railslave kinda hinted at, System Shock/Bioshock series toys with it a bit, although in an obviously different light.

I think that was Jericho. I never played it myself, but I also remember it getting mixed reviews.Acid King wrote:Undying is the bee's knees. There was another Clive Barker related FPS that had some magic thrown in but I don't think it turned out very well.
The original Hexen is still one of my favorite games to play co-op; and for something along those lines I would recommend Dark Messiah of Might and Magic, if you haven't tried it already.
Also, a little older and obscure, look into Requiem: Avenging Angel. Admittedly, from what I can remember, the game can play a little clumsy at times, but overall I found it enjoyable. The opening stage on that one... *shudder*

I guess Shadowrun (2007) qualifies, but I did not play it. The PC version was infamous for being Vista exclusive (the other one being Halo 2). I recall reading both got cracked a.s.a.p. to work on XP.
Another one I haven't played - Psychotoxic. Always looked interesting to me and I might give it a try soon.
Then there's Zeno Clash (didn't play). No idea if it deals with any supernatural themes, but I wouldn't expect to find any space troops there.
Legends of Might and Magic - not played.

Daikatana.
How's THAT for a 666th post?
How's THAT for a 666th post?
Two working class dudes, one black one white, just baked a tray of ten cookies together.
An oligarch walks in and grabs nine cookies for himself.
Then he says to the white dude "Watch out for that black dude, he wants a piece of your cookie!"

Referencing that game is positively evil.Mischief Maker wrote:Daikatana.

Daikatana has some good moments actually. It's funny to go back and read all the postmortems with complaints about the team trying to do too much - the content in that game still isn't as varied as your typical AAA title today! Still, lots of bad too, and it's definitely nobody's top 10 or even likely a top 100-500 game.
Legend wasn't with us long enough. Unreal 2 was overall not great, but Wheel of Time alone justifies their existence, and there's all their great early stuff.
Speaking of things, late '80s / early '90s SSI stuff seems kind of close to this - their RPGs and dungeon crawls aren't properly speaking FPSes (has anybody played DeathKeep or Slayer, though?) but they often do add a good bit of that same feeling. Tend to be gorgeously detailed too.

Re: Magic based FPS?
Shadowcaster? It was one of Raven software's earlier games before Heretic and Hexen.
Re: Magic based FPS?
Shadowcaster isn't very good.
Re: Magic based FPS?
Ooh, Ultima Underworld as well. Forgot about that.

I haven't looked much into those SSI titles until now.. Lookin' pretty groovy, I'll have to track some of those down.

Realms of the Haunting
more adventure than action, though. I really liked the game back in the day.
