I don't see the point of making a deal over someone's gender. If they did something particularly spectacular, that should be what's up for discussion, not how "OMG THIS GAME WAS MADE BY A GURRRRLLLLL".

On the subject of her in particular, I think she should have just stayed on RPGs. The designer of Altered Beast isn't something to be praised for  But being a writer and designer of Phantasy Star sure is.

Like i said,
i obviously have chauvinistic issues (bred into me), but its just kind of cool ..
some of those games are pretty insane and wierd, design wise , shadow dancer (Megadrive), Mystic defender ..ect .

Image

Yeah i agree with altered beast ... but then you think, a girl designed(re-sprited ??) this..!!

imagine that these days, i dunno, i think its pretty cool. Not something they saw often(at all) then , and i doubt you would now, so its pretty unusual.

Im glad i have those issues! So i can get my ass handed to me like this :D

I also refuse to except that the female members of power ballad band HEART were responsible for some of those solos..!!!!!!!! , looking forward to being wrong

Who's "you," brother? I'm glad to give Rieko Kodama the spotlight though.

I'm sure Rieko would be absolutely flattered that you consider her to be almost as good as a man.

Guess it didn't/doesn't pleasantly surprise you guys :)

And you live in a world where women have had roles this big for years (in games design)? ..

Its sad that they DONT, guess what,...... they didn't

We all grew up in a world where women didn't do this stuff (in those days)

makes it extra cool! imho

Dunno what your culture is like, but mine is extremely homophobic , racist and chauvinistic

When I told my friend that women did the designs in Symphony of the Night, as well as the music, he was like "wow!".

So, your reaction isn't THAT weird. People will bring the hammer down on you on the internet though. Just how it is.

No worries, railslave. But women have been doing high profile stuff in traditionally male-dominated industries for a long time. Did you know that most of the early computer icons (original Macintosh and early Windows) were done by Susan Kare? ( http://www.kare.com/articles/sjmerc.html )

I'd bring the hammer down in real life, as well, and I do. The only thing I'm going to be surprised by a woman is if she pulls down her pants and fucks me in the ass.

Der wimminz have several good representatives in the VGM sphere. There's also Tamayo Kawamoto, Miki Higashino and Kinuyo Yamashita, just off the top of my head.

timely post, I'm actually finishing up a translation of a 1993 interview with Rieko Kodama and the original Phantasy Star team right now. There's a neat anecdote in there about how she learned sprite design from the guy who did Flicky at Sega, Yoshiki Kawasaki. Should be up in a week or so...

Perfectly OK to think it's awesome a woman has made so many amazing games in such a male dominated industry. Denying any discourse on the basis gender/ethnicity etc even existing has led to a convenient widespread ignorance of the very real subjugation of women in the 21st century. OP stated that he comes from a sexist/racist community and now he thinks a Japanese woman is pretty cool? Well that sounds awesome to me!

ANYWAY we should be talking about Reiko Kodama regardless because of her ridiculous talent in crafting perfect videogames. Games like Phantasy Star 2, glorious to behold and uncompromising in its brutal difficulty, like crawling through some fucking printed circuit board while pounding hi gain FM synth crashes through your head. I first played the series as an adult, and it acted as some kind of abrasive poultice, sucking out any residual childhood nostalgia for Final Fantasy and replacing it with hot, visceral, expertly paced RPGs. Phantasy Star IV was a lot easier, but stupidly gorgeous and remains one of the few 16 bit RPGs with a genuinely good story (certainly puts Final Fantasy VI to shame). The jewel in PS4's crown is the soundtrack, which is possibly the best soundtrack to any videogame ever, all glorious arpeggios saturated with that thick MD bass. (Also, the soundtrack was written by a woman, ZOMGWTFOTLETC)

I did always appreciate Zio/Lassic boss theme "Laughter"'s eschewing of "epic" for "stomp on your fucking head."

Funny how women played an influential factor designing in the 16-bit days. But what about now? Is it all the Goichi Sudas, Shinji Mikamis and such? Are there any influential ladies working on current-gen consoles?

'Laughter' is one of the greatest pieces of chip-music ever. Absolutely primal and menacing, especially consdering the context it's played in.

I'd agree that in the realm of Japanese video game soundtracks, there's no gender difference. If anything, JP female composers tend to focus on romantic-style compositions, which are my preference. Many games known for their music are female-composed.

As for Phantasy Star III, I'm a big fan but the high points are definitely from the women: Ozaki's character designs and Ippo's music. PSIII was definitely the installment that could've gained the most from a remake that added all the plot elements originally cut for time.

Ippo has a lot of clever aspects in her music. Two of my favorites are:

-The Ground in PSIII that grows from a solo piece to a quintet depending on number of party members. Sadly, it looks like the preliminary pieces can't be found on YouTube anymore
-Land master AXV-25 in PSIV (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZULs_ffj_f8). The vehicular overworld piece that doesn't really start until 25 sec. in, far longer than the regular 10 sec. between random battles. That means players will usually never hear the upbeat part unless they stop for awhile even though nothing else (not even menus) are accessible while in a vehicle

As expected of country quite efficient at training classical musicians (the area where females compete with males on a regular basis), no wonder if you are good at making music there, you get jobs.
Societies of disparity all seem to have such enclaves for the downtrodden. We just rarely get to hear about it.
