I didn't actually watch the vid, but after 7 years in this country, I can say the women are just as bad as the men. They don't do otaku stuff, but your average Japanese woman older then 28 has far more interest in going out to eat cake and bitching about nothing then going out to find dick. Also when you do have a couple, the woman usually expects the man to jump her, she will practically never show any sign. The guy just has to guess when she's ready, and most of them just give up after awhile.

Well, I am sure the lack of sexual desires has nothing to do with women who prefer a career over children, a long recession in Japan and the general view that children are just an annoyance.

Cleary it is all the fault of those filthy otaku guys who haven't had a chance to breed in the first place. They should all just stop fapping and Japan should stop producing porn. This will all solve their problems.

My current girlfriend (Japanese) is 28. She very much likes taking the lead, often starts making out with me while waiting in line at 7-11. First time she did this I was quite shocked. I'm talking about busting nuts. I fell on the hardest times of my life not long ago and my marriage basically ended largely b/c my dick was not getting the attention it deserved.

Culture, dominating morals and even the deviations from the said morals are all just reflections of the economic conditions. The so-called 'Otaku culture' is just one of the many aspects of the mainstream culture in Japan. It can`t by itself be the cause of the economic woes and the falling birth rates(although, with some effort one could make an argument that it`s practically an autocatalytic reaction at this point).

The rapidly deteriorating economy coupled with worsening career prospects are the more likely causes of the ongoing atomization of society, alienation between sexes and the ever increasing number of dysfunctional families than a bunch of nerds humping their pillows. All of this is hardly exclusive to Japan. It`s just that the Japanese have chosen to deal differently with all of these than the rest of the developed industrial countries facing many of the same problems.

I watched it. It made some good points about otaku culture, escapism, the sublimated longing for care-free high school days via animu girls. Would have liked to see it go deeper there, but with a mainstream source like the BBC, that's obviously not going to happen.

A better examination of otakus (who find a less modest western cousin in disaffected eclectics, aka hipsters) would be to look more closely at the economic and social reality they're trying to escape from. In that sense an otaku doc really shouldn't focus on the particular manifestation of otakus per se, as that is superficial. I mean, god, the 40 hour office job work week in the US is bad enough, and I can't imagine the grey "life" of a salaryman being appealing to a 4th grader, who becomes a 5th grader, who becomes a 6th grader, who becomes...

It's not just Japan, it's every 1st world country. Last year was the first year the white demographic had more deaths than births in the USA, and minorities will soon follow as they become more established.

If you render marriage obsolete, obviously traditional attitudes no longer apply. If the expectations are impossible to meet, and no one needs one another, then it's just a troublesome mess only crazy people would put up with.

At the end of the day it's purely political. People follow incentives. If you want people to fuck and make babies, make it profitable for them to do so.* Or at the very least, non-punitive. Otherwise no one really has a reason to complain about extinction. It's not like the road signs weren't there for them the entire time.

* Back when the US was a backwater, having a lot of kids basically meant having lots of slaves to help with the farmwork. And an increased chance of some of them surviving to adulthood and taking care of you when you become a raisinhead (there's that "need" thing again). All in all, the kids really got the shit end of that relationship. The attitudes of "obey thy parents/don't be heard" really captures how much that was actual outright slavery.
