10 best TG-16 Hucard shooters, and 10 best TG-16 CD shooters

Post by Fighter17 »

I need your help guys. I'm looking for the 10 best shooters for Hucard format, and CD format. I mostly play Aero Blasters, Soldier Blade, Blazing Lasers, and Super Star Soldier for the Hucard format. I know there're more shooters for the Hucard format.

Also, I don't know where to start for the 10 best CD shooters for the TG-16 CD. I know Gates of Thunder, Lords of Thunder, Spriggan 1 and 2, R-Type CD, and that's it. I'm really looking for some GOOD CD shooters!

Please make a list for Hucards, and CD.

P.S.: Is Metamor Jupiter for the TG-16 CD any good?

I love Dead Moon and Psychosis....both high quality shooters.

I haven't played it myself, but I remember hearing that Sylphia (Compile game with a fairy character) is supposed to be pretty good...not sure if it's rare/expensive to get though. Then of course there's Sapphire, which IS ridiculously expensive, heh.

Yip, Sylphia is a really good game, but I'm afraid to say it's the second most expensive CD Shooter after Sapphire. :(

Metamor Jupiter is alright, with some average-to-decent graphics. It has some cool graphical effects later on, but for a 1992 game, it could have played and looked much better.

Agreed, but it still wouldn't be bad to add to your collection.

Here are some others you might consider:

Cho Aniki (very weird)
Ai Cho Aniki (pegs the weird meter!)
Download 2 (much better than its HuCard forefather!)
Image Fight II

And here is a word of warning: the gulf in quality between Spriggan and its sequal is HUGE! Spriggan was a near masterpiece, but Spriggan 2 just left me feeling empty for a better experience. The switch from vertical to horizontal orientation was not a good idea...

don't forget atomic robo kid special and galaga 88. there's also a fantastic port of space harrier on the pc engine, but there are better ones available. i'll also mention photograph boy even though it's a very different kind of shooter.

all hucards, these.

Oh, how could i forget -

Super Darius (CD) - ace game, love the music!
Super Darius II (SCD) - interesting variation on other versions available
Darius Plus (Hucard) - Ditto super darius

I'm sure there are others. Coryoon, while an enjoyable game, does not rate among the top "shooters" for me. Summer Carnival 93 will appeal to fans of Super Star Soldier. Gradius/Salamander may appeal to some (just not me). Alzadick -Summer Carnival 92 is not even a proper game, just a score attack game. Final Soldier is good, just too easy. Never played Soldier Blade.

I actually enjoyed Spriggan 2 a lot, but it does have its problems. The thing I don't understand though is why everyone always cites the switch from vertical to horizontal as the game's big problem. That's not a problem! Horizontal shooters are great stuff :D

The problems I see are that many of the bosses are unidentifiably weird (variants of "weird formless robots with tentacles" instead of being clear-cut awesome mechs), the dialogue gets in the way of the gameplay (which you can turn off, but then you lose the story), and the sound effects lack punch (which makes it feel less visceral than the first game). But in terms of the actual amount of action, Spriggan 2 gets it right... so I think the switch to horizontal worked. It was just other factors that held the game down.

Oh yeah, and here's a list. I'm not listing HuCards because I HATE ALL HUCARDS (except Magical Chase, that one's pretty good).

Ten Great CD shooters:
Choaniki
Gate of Thunder
Kiaidan 00
Lords of Thunder
Rayxanber 2 (totally different style from the other games on this list)
Sapphire
Spriggan
Spriggan 2
Super Darius 2
Sylphia

Metamor Jupiter: not a great shooter by a long shot. It does try to be an awesome graphical feast. In the first level this philosophy backfires miserably, as a spaceship slows the Turbo to a halt when it PAINFULLY scales and rotates onto the screen at about 4 frames per second. It was a (long) moment that made me wonder if the playtesters were blind to the system's limitations. But then in the third level, you fly down a giant laser cannon barrel and it's rotating more smoothly than the rotating corridor from Super Castlevania 4! It's unbelievable that developer Flight Plan (they're still around!) could make such an awesome background, but botch something as simple as a spaceship scaling and rotating...

What about 1941 (Super Grafx) and 1943 Kai PCE? They seem to be very good ports, from what I tried.

Thanks for the info guys.

I try out the games thru the emulator, and play the shooters you guys told me.

Nexzr Special (a.k.a Summer Carnival ´93) was very good, I love it a lot. (The music was great)
Sapphire was great with its graphics, and music.
I found the Spriggan games to be O.K. (I like MUSHA better)
I going to try out Sylphia later, but I check the screenshots of the game, and it's looks kind-of odd.
I'm also going to try out Rayxamber II and III soon.

From the whole search, I found Nexzr Special and Sapphire to my likings.

I'm going to try out the HuCard shooters sooner or later.

If you dig Nexzr and Sapphire, the Rayxanber games (although horizontal) should be right up your alley. The music in particular is excellent for both.
