Anyone play Tube Slider for the Gamecube?
Heard about this game recently. Been fiendin' for some fast-paced, F-Zero style racing action. The videos make it look really good, but how does it stack up to GX?

I've seen it described as a mediocre clone of F-Zero GX, except that it was handled by Nd Cube, who developed Maximum Velocity on the GBA.
The biggest problem seems to be a complete lack of track variety. As the title implies, every single track is a giant tube, and they apparently go on for way too long to hold one's interest. There are brief stretches of normal track in some of them, though that doesn't add much. One significant difference from F-Zero is that it has items. The vehicles definitely handle well and the graphics are solid, but you're probably better off revisiting F-Zero and Wipeout.

Wipeout always felt too slow for me. Tried Fatal Inertia but the racing seemed too clunky.

One user on here was very fond of Kirby Air Rade.
Jak X - now that is a FAST game. Should be played without a memory card in the slot since auto-save is glitchy. Not nearly a difficult as F-Zero GX, but it's fun while it lasts. Driving felt about the same as in Jak 3, but X run so fast and looked so good I didn't mind. I wish Sega chaps of GX and OutRun 2(SP) fame joined forces with Naughty Dog or Criterion and unleashed one hell of a racer.

Tube Slider is as boring as it sounds. It was also NEC's big, disappointing comeback in videogames. Maybe if you're a huge fan of futuristic racing games you could get something out of it..? Dunno. I'd recommend F.A.S.T. Racing League by Shin'en over it if you're looking for a lesser-known game like that to play.

So you never played on Rapier or Phantom? I think Wipeout is the fastest racing series there is, definitely faster than F-Zero on Phantom.Never_Scurred wrote:Wipeout always felt too slow for me.
I can also recommend Star Wars Episode I Racer, preferably the Dreamcast version. Don't be turned off by the license.

Re: Anyone play Tube Slider for the Gamecube?
Is Wipeout faster than NEO Kobe (which I haven't played) or any of the Extreme-G titles?
Some interesting picks in here, I'll give some a try.
Some of the "more traditional" racers are disappointing me for various reasons. MK Double Dash's early stages don't hold my interest at all. F-Zero GX I haven't spent time with yet but it seems promising all the same.
SW Ep 1 Racer does look intriguing. Would love to see the arcade version somewhere sometime. There's also a PC version out there. For some reason, IGN loved the PC version but didn't like the Dreamcast port, apparently because it's "not pushing the Dreamcast" (rather than citing some technical flaw over the other versions).

The arcade version is not the same game. It was developed by Sega instead of Lucasarts, and released the year after. There is a mall near here that still has an operating cabinet. It's a slow and mundane game in comparison, and not worth bothering with.SW Ep 1 Racer does look intriguing. Would love to see the arcade version somewhere sometime.
Also, it has Jar Jar next to the Sega logo in the attract mode, god forbid.

Re: Anyone play Tube Slider for the Gamecube?
It takes Sega to be this good...it takes Ages to forget Jar Jar.

That PC Star Wars racer is legendary. People who don't normally talk about games happen to mention it in the least expected times (it's like Giana Sisters in that respect). Must have left some really pleasant memories.

This Tube Slider game reminds me of Ballistics for the PC. Probably the fastest game ever...
Re: Anyone play Tube Slider for the Gamecube?
I remember a long-gone local video store hosting a tournament for it in 2000. It was on the N64 version.Obiwanshinobi wrote:That PC Star Wars racer is legendary. My own secondhand N64 copy of the game must have had its save data heavily modified with a Gameshark. The title screen is filled with glitched text with the image flipped, everything is unlocked, and I have infinite credits for Watto's shop represented by another string of glitched text stretching beyond the screen.

Re: Anyone play Tube Slider for the Gamecube?
I could understand that. IIRC it was basically the N64 one but at higher res-- kinda crappy. It might've been more forgivable had the arcade one not been so lush.Ed Oscuro wrote: SW Ep 1 Racer does look intriguing. Would love to see the arcade version somewhere sometime. Re: Anyone play Tube Slider for the Gamecube?
N64 Episode 1 Racer plays remarkably smooth. It's probably got the most intuitive controls of any futuristic 3D racer I've played.
