I've been wondering about this ever since I've been playing this mode a lot lately.
I've noticed that in some of my runs, I deal so much damage to the bosses (it's like my shot's rate of fire skyrocketed) that I breeze through bosses a lot faster due to the bosses not reaching its harder attack cycles. Is there something I'm doing that's influencing my ship's damage?

There is something going on. It has something to do with the timing of your locks, and if you do something right, you get to do a lot more damage for some mysterious reason. I think there was a video in nico that explained the thing a bit better but I can't seem to find it now.
