100 import-only Sega Saturn games in 10 minutes video

Post by greg »

Okay, first some credit where credit is due.
Here is the 100 Sega Saturn Games in 10 Minutes video This is a nice video, featuring both domestic and Japanese Saturn games. The big downside, in my opinion, is the trance music. While I like trance, I prefer these videos to have the original game sounds. I don't know why these 100 games in 10 minutes videos tend to have music put on top of the games.

Here is a Top 65 Sega Saturn Import Games video. Great video, although again it'd be nice to ditch the music. My other complaint is how arbitrary such a video is when it claims to be the "top such and such number" of anything.

This has been in the works for nearly 2 years, but tonight I finally completed my very own "100 import-only Sega Saturn games in 10 minutes" video.

Here is my video.

Some may criticize it for being too shmup-centered (although hopefully not by anyone on here) or too fighting game-centered. I tried to show a bit of a balance and included several puzzle, RPG, and SRPG games in the mix as well. A volume 2 is already in the works. A big thanks to Undamned, Specineff, and another friend of mine for chipping in and lending me these games to record footage from. The majority of these games are my own. Giving a bump to this post for those who haven't seen it. Greg spent quite some time capturing and editing this video, so it would be mighty kind of you if you followed the link and watched it.

Thanks.

A really nice video. While I think some of the footage that is entirely animated cutscene might not exactly tell the viewer what the game is about, I assume you did that because the reason you would buy those games is for aforesaid cutscenes. If that makes sense. It's a real nice selection too, though I am biased and only cared about the arcade games!

I showed the animated cutscenes for some of the games because they stood out to me. I showed cutscenes of Langrisser III and Suchie Pai Dokidoki Nightmare because I really like the character designs of Satoshi Urushihara and Kenichi Sonoda respectively.

And thank you for putting something Suchie Pai related in there. Love the series. It went out with a bang before Jaleco dissolved (part IV is really good, if not laughably broken). I understand that someone still has the rights to the series though.

Good place to namedrop Konami Antiques MSX Collection I guess.
I believe Guardian Force should be shown as you circle around one of the later bosses, or score hefty time bonus (can be easily done on training stage). Any distinguishing feature among so many 2D shooters would be welcome.
Analogically, I'd put Shienryu's lightning weapon in there. Might have seen a similar sight in Gunhed, but it looks very distinctive.
Garegga bit shows medalling and that's fine with me.

Regarding Suchie Pai, Jaleco has a series of game music CDs that I keep getting hit up for on Amazon Japan. I'm not the hugest fan, nor am I willing to pay more than 3,000 yen for a CD. But it's worth checking out if you're interested.

About Konami MSX Antiques, I actually did record a bit of footage of that game. My friend has it and lent it to me. However, I opted to not put it in this first video. It will go into a second video whenever it's made! That same friend also had Gradius Deluxe Pack, which unfortunately was sealed mint and he is too big of a goofball to just open it up and enjoy it. I don't think he intends to sell it, so why's he so stingy? I actually owned it long ago, and scanned the included papercraft and shared it with the forum here many years ago (I may still have it on my FTP server somewhere).

There were several games I managed to get footage of 2 player action for when my friend came to visit me back in September. Guardian Force, the Psikyo shmups, Radiant Silvergun, and especially D&D. I re-watched the footage to find about 6 seconds worth of video that had the most action.

So a second video is already underway, with footage already taken of Konami Antiques, the Thunderforce collections, and two other Capcom Generations recorded. However, to get 100 games, I'm hoping that the guy from Segagagadomain will let me borrow footage from a handful of games. He's agreed to let me use materials from his site for my Masaya fanpage (sadly I haven't done much with it and is still incomplete), so I hope he'll let me borrow video of some of the more expensive games like Delisoba, Crows, and Ninja Haomaru (or whatever it's called--the lightning bolt ninja game).

Thanks! While watching this video over and over again through the editing process, I noticed how the vast majority of these games are all 2D and sprite-based. Bernie Stolar only cared about stupid sports games. Nowadays, who gives a shit about NHL '96? Now how many people care about Radiant Silvergun?

I posted this video on the Racketboy forum, and that's a rather tough crowd. I had to explain to a guy on there that the purpose of these videos is not to thoroughly educate people on gameplay, but rather to trigger nostalgia for those who have played them, and to introduce games that people haven't seen before. "Wow, there was a Tenchi Muyou puzzle game? Ah, so Galaxy Fraulein Yuna 3 is an SRPG. Hey, what was that awesome-looking pinball game?" etc. Even one of the moderators told me that the segments I put in the video were uninteresting. Here's my response to that. To me, hearing "Just a couple more shots!" in Dodonpachi is far from boring. I showed action against the end boss of Leynos, Sexy Parodius, and pretty far into many other games. Lots of Japanese import gaming videos just show people screwing around with level 1 characters and it's obvious they don't know what they're doing. I also made a point to include 2-player gameplay of several games. I imagine people just don't care for RPGs and SRPGs. You can't devote a ton of time to those when working with a 10 minute timeframe.
