Double Shienryu
hi just got this the other day. explosion is alright, although i don't like how the bullets can be hard to see, i don't have problems tracking in Battle Garegga, and this gives me a hard time.
and Shienryu, i've only played it as a domestic Gekioh. it seems like the balancing is WAY different. i could almost 1cc the thing before and now i can't clear stage 3 without credit feeding.
also, where the fuck is the option screen? i need tate for shienryu. i spent about 15 minutes trying buttons, but no dice. the manual being japanese, and also a simple release with no obvious progression. please help, i bought it for this.

I actually just got this the other day myself, haven't played it too much, though I do have to say I like that the original Shienryu has a low-res option, it looks quite nice on my RGB monitor.
I only played it briefly, but I do believe that there is an option screen for Shienryu: I think that after you insert a coin if you press a certain direction on the control pad it'll say "Press Start to Options," sort of like you needed to press Select on the Psyvariar games in order to make it say that. Don't quote me on it though.
As for the difference between this and Geki-oh, I don't think the balancing is any different, but I do know that this game has less slowdown than the PS1 version did, that might be a part of it.

Actually I think you might be right about that, I remember seeing him and saying "was that in the PS1 version? I don't remember it if it was." Wonder if there's anything else like that...guess we'll hafta find out, heh.captain ahar wrote:there's a lot more effects going on too. like how on stage 2 the boss descends down toward the water before you fight, or maybe i am remembering incorrectly...

I think BulletMagnet's right about the options. I think you need to press down with the d-pad on the title screen. Something like that. The tate version that comes with this looks better to me than when I use my Saturn.
I've also thought that there were a few differences between the three version of Shienryu I have (Saturn, Gekioh, and Double Shienryu), but I don't know the game well enough to pinpoint the differences. I didn't notice any difference in difficulty.
Shienryu Explosion really is the easiest 1cc out there, at least that I know of. But it has a nice scoring system.

Tried it again last night to be sure, and you're right, there doesn't seem to be a HS save when it comes to Shienryu. Kind of a silly omission if you ask me...heck, they go to the trouble of including a low-res view mode, but no score saving? On top of that I think Explosion saves scores (it saves SOMETHING, for sure), though I'd hafta double check that as well...argh.

Yep. Isn't it sad that they have this in a budget Simple 2000 release, but Taito (or whoever did the ports) couldn't be bothered to feature this in Mushihime-sama or the Psikyo collections? Ah well...captain ahar wrote:also, it seems that after seeing this game in lo-res i have a point of reference for "shimmering" with my other ps2 shmups.
