EGRET II + OLD BOARDS (Tiger Heli)

Post by Sir Arthur ahf »

Hi guys!

Just to know if anybody here has tried Tiger Heli on a Egret II

Had problems in the past with the sound of Prehistoric Isle (89), and I would need to be sure If can buy such an old board like TH.

Apparently it was something related to the -5V.

If anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated

Cheers!

(mod edit - moved to hardware forum)

A mystery! wrapped inside an enigma! ensconced within an Egret II.

Yes, you're very warm. (This would be a good question for the Hardware subforum, specifically the "Questions that don't deserve a thread" - I don't mean to be rude in saying that; but it's actually a very simple answer: Your PSU doesn't provide -5V current on a pin while the game requires it. How to fix this I am not so sure about - hopefully you can simply swap out the PSU for one that does provide -5V on the right pin, and keep the Egret II's wiring the same; somebody else will have experience in this.)

Sorry guys,

Please move the thread.

But the thing is... Does Tiger Heli need -5V?

Thanks Ed, but to change PSU is not that simple task (at least for me)

That'll be the question you need answering in the HW section. If you have no -5v, get it wired. There's quite a bit of older stuff, including Double Dragon, that require the line for sound, so definitely worth hooking up.

According to the PCBs pinout, found here : http://crazykong.com/pins/Tigerheli.pin.txt , Tiger Heli only needs +5 and +12 volts to operate. If you need -5V for other old games, you'd best invest in something like this for your EGRET II:

(Converts +5V to -5V so you won't need to buy a new PSU)

Oops, guess we weren't on the right track if it needs +5V and +12V.

Looking at that pinout, it does need an adapter, because it's got a different number of pins than the usual JAMMA board.

Bit of a daft question probably, but where is the negatron adapter getting the +5V from? Another pin? I thought the -5V boards just were using a pin that many other (newer) boards don't draw the -5V from.

Well, I just assumed that the OP is aware that a JAMMA adapter is needed for Tiger Heli. I just highlighted that there's no mention of a -5V line in the pinout.

For your other question, the Negatron adapter takes the +5V from the JAMMA edge connector on the -5V adding adapter of course. In true JAMMA harnesses (EGRET II use an "almost JAMMA" wiring) a -5V line is available and the GND is also hooked up properly, but alas, TAITO's PSUs doesn't have -5V and the GND leaves more to ask for some games.

^^Edited my post as I was in the middle of something else why typing the reply.
