Intake = Dr. Mario meets Ikaruga

Post by spadgy »

At least that's how the press release I just got is pitching this new game. Here's a trailer. Interesting concept.

Here's the press release:
Hey there!

I'm one of the co-founders of Cipher Prime. We'd be absolutely honored if you would review our newest title, Intake. Our previous games include the award-winning and critically acclaimed Auditorium, Splice, Pulse, Fractal and Shimsham.

Here's some info:
Intake is the new retro-futuristic drugstep arcade shooter from Cipher Prime. In this polychromatic love child of Dr. Mario and Ikaruga, you battle a never-ending barrage of pills, pushing your skill and reflexes to the limit to avoid a lethal dosage. Blast and combo your way through an epic cascade of audiovisual mayhem so intoxicating it comes with its own warning label.

ntake just released and it's on 10% discount until November 13th. With full Steam support, including Leaderboards, Cloud Saving, and Achievements, this is the ultimate arcade experience brought home.

A little background on Cipher Prime:
Cipher Prime is a little indie game studio based proudly in Philadelphia. The release of Intake marks our 5th anniversary, and it’s amazing to see how far both we and the city have come in that time. We started with little clout and less money, but one driving desire: Make Cool Sh*t. As we grew, the Philly game community grew with us, and we’ve done everything we can to bolster the scene that nurtured us. We see the community grow and shine at our weekly Dev Night, which is the city’s largest weekly tech meetup. And this year, Cipher Prime’s own offices expanded to form the Philly Game Forge, the first games co-working space in Philadelphia. We've even made free community tools like Zerglink, which helps developers send out promo codes.

A lot can happen in five years. For us, we hope this is just the beginning. It’s just a matter of asking: What would you do if you couldn’t fail?
EDIT: Spelling in the subject line!

Gee, guys, I don't know what you mean here. Does it just have three colors? Or does it have a bundle like Dr. Mario? The suspense is killing me...I need some chill pills.

Well - that line is from a press release, where people like to say anything that pop's into their mind! The chap from the studio that sent me it as actually a real character (and he seems lovely; very enthusiastic). His 'out of office' is probably what qualifies as 'zany', so I'm surprised the release isn't more eccentric!

This one was in the $6 tier of last week's Cipher Prime Humble Weekly Bundle. Hm. So was I wrong to pass up on it?

For the record I've heard worse dubstep (for about the same duration), but it's still abrasive.

I assume there's more to this than clicking the pills .. does their color matter at all? I can't even tell from the trailer.

Dr. Mario meets Ikaruga
This doesn't look like it plays remotely like either game.

Each pill is black and white and spinning. Clicking on 3 white portions in a row gets a combo and vice versa. Like Ikaruga.

Then he says to the white dude "Watch out for that black dude, he wants a piece of your cookie!"

I like Dr. Mario. I think Ikaruga is... ok. I don't know what to think of that trailer. Need to play.

I was picturing something more like Ghostlop. This looks like it could be pretty fun. But not as fun as Ghostlop!

If you want Dr. Mario, "Dungeon of Elements" in the same bundle is a straight clone, albeit with a terrible Puzzle-Quest-like frontend that barely has any effect on gameplay.
