A rare pic of my cab when I was a kid...

Post by GaijinPunch »

Moon Shuttle, bitches!

This was the study in the house I grew up in, which my mom still lives in. I believe this is about 1983... to put it into perspective, my sister who is 3 years older than me is playing.

Nah. I forgot to mention, it was my sisters. She won it at a some raffle at a roller skating rink (boy, this thread couldn't get more 80's). I forgot the occasion but she was a visitor. As you could imagine, I played it the most, and got pretty good. I remember one of the loops the asteroids were all over the place... called my dad at work to tell him my score even. We didn't need any bullshit leaderboards.

Anywho, she sold it for like $200 after we had it a year or so. I never once saw the game again.

I think my favorite thing about this is seeing all those cabinets in such nice shape. This is excellent.

Now that you mention this, I also notice that the stitching on the jeans pocket is really striking, as is the squared-off shape. The other pair of jeans is more traditional (and like what is common today). But maybe this is still common and I just don't notice.

Sorry GP, I wasn't really staring at your younger self's backside...

Neat photos, thanks for sharing! 8)

No prob -- and they have definitely reddened... now yellowed. ;) Photoshop Auto Colors have saved them. For the record, they are slides, but not sure what kind. My dad was never into fancy anything... he used the Sony digital camera I gave him for about 10 years. My guess is it's quite low grade slide film. :)

That's good to know, b/c I'd wonder how you could do that seeing as I'm not in this picture.

That was big dough back then!

Here's one last random shot. Again, at Chuck E. Cheese. Nothing spectacular, but some nice cabs. Again, I'm not in it.

And now to complete the night, I'll close with this one... letting everyone ponder how my father drove this "Free Candy Mobile" and never got arrested for suspicion alone. It's got curtains on the windows or Christ's sake.

uneducated opinion: cabs aside, those looks extremely like stereotypical pictures from post ww2 eastern germany. are you sure you're from texas?

I'm still not in any of those pics. The three girls about to get in the van (whoa... that sounded bad) were friends of my sister. The next image (not shown) is all of them partying down. I think that pic was before the Moon Shuttle one which would have made me quite the young tike -- 5 or 6. No comments on the hideous fur coats?

Yep, those pics were typical of the Chuck E. Cheese's back in the early 1980s...it wasn't until the mid-80s that they implemented the cool Teen Night deal for a set price, if you were between the ages of 13 to 18, all the unlimited soda, pizza and games for a number of hours was yours for the taking. Not to mention, the lighting in the Pizza Time Theater portion was darkened when they'd have the timely animatronic shows every so often to enjoy with your pizza and drinks (usual soda, water or beer by the pitcher). In the back of the theater, was room to play those cool cocktail-table styled arcade games that had dedicated seating booths for up to four pals to eat/drink 'n' play at the same time (this was true for some CEC locations back in 1982).

The original CEC location was at the Stevens Creek shopping center just across the street from the world-famous Winchester Mystery Mansion in San Jose, CA of all places (debuted back in 1977). The 1999 California Extreme classic arcade game & pinball show was hosted inside the original CEC site location -- it was fucking huge and spacious inside with plenty of unused rooms during the show.

The modern day Chuck E. Cheese's nowadays is nothing like how it was back in the early 1980s.

Chuck E. Cheese Factoid time: To open up a brand new CEC franchise, it takes a whopping $1.5 million USD to open one up (and this is not including buying the land to develop it on, the extra associated fees to build it from the ground up with a contracted construction company and to hire management and employees afterwards on the payroll). Not to mention, either buying or renting the latest in arcade gaming to attract the paying customers to fill out the gaming room floor to it's fullest capacity. As it's been said, it's the latest & greatest in arcade games/pinballs/prize redemption games to keep dough/profits rolling in. It's a given these days.
