Shmups.org Halloween Recommendations 2013

Image

In the spirit of all hallows eve, you're challenged to spending a ghoulish night of terror with the much feared Undeadline.

Not so much for the Damocles level players, but more for newcomers to the game. You'll no doubt be screaming all night. :)

If you've not played Undeadline before, give it a go and post your thoughts.

What a coincidence - I just gave Undeadline a first try yesterday evening.

Oh the horror, I didn't even last the first stage!

Man, you know what? I've still yet to play Undeadline! It seems like basically a perfect game for me; I guess it sorta got swept under the radar. I don't do anything on Halloween because I don't trust humans and my empty home, so I'll be here alllllll night. What's the best way to play it?

Shackled to your controller, naked, in a dank stone dungeon basement with rats nibbling at your feet and the howl of wolves coming through the vent.

That describes the feeling of using an emulator and roms perfectly. :D

I mean, I can do that. I'm all about getting immersed.

I mean port-wise. I take it Genny is the way to go? Or x68000k?

I think the MD version has the edge in terms of all-round balancing, that's the one to go for.

Enjoy it, it's terrifying!

Gave this game an honest try some months back, it's tough. Never got past the midboss in the final level. Nowadays I can't even get past the Ruins boss, that one is annoying.

Next year you should totally recommend SNES Nosferatu. Incredible game.

I agree; quite an overlooked gem. Man, looking now, that thing has almost tripled in price over the last couple of years. Used to be a $20 game, easy.

Good one, perfect for Halloween!

Undeadline is about the horror theme and the horror of being brutalised. It's two-fold delicious nastiness!

Undead Line is awesome. It's been a while since I have played and finished it, but if I recall correctly, the key to (easier) success was the five way shot. And a little bit of memorization.

100% memorisation and the right shot type at the right time should do it. ;)

The key to success is sticking to one shot type for most of the game and powering that guy up. Other than the 5-way, I only used one other weapon (fire) on one stage (graveyard) and early on so the lack of powering up doesn't matter. It would've been a little better without the RPG-esque power-up system/if using each weapon at the right time was actually encouraged.

one of the few original japanese md carts I own, together with Twinkle Tale and Devil's Crash... An adequate trio for Halloween actually.
I could never clear it on the Crazy difficult, but Normal was very doable. Love the Cemetery stage music, and the graphical effects in the Lava stage.

I have all 3 versions, all are totally worth playing.

MSX one is still quite awesome. It's also the darkest and goriest. If you play it on a Turbo-R and use the special boot disk, it plays silky smooth too.

X68000 is a remake of MSX, but it's still a very different game, longer, fantastic graphics and music. Due to the class change system, the game strategy is a bit different, but fuck it's still insanely hard.

MD, this is a total remake by PAL Soft, overall this is the most balanced for sure, it's all designed around just one character, and the random luck based parts have been removed. Plus you don't have memorize the minefields of hidden chests from the previous versions. In other words, it's a pure skill game now.

I was waiting for you to chime in, Damocles. :)

Thanks for sharing the collection, SuperDeadite. The promise of video game bit gore makes me really want to try out the MSX verison, as does that awesome x68000 cover. I've got my work cut out for me. Gah, I miss old PC boxes.

Oh hey, classic Seta! Gonna give that one a try soon.

Edit: I just started Shadow Tower Abyss, the translation. Excellent fun, really gives me a feeling of going back in time. Think I might crank up the brightness a bit so I don't miss items hiding in the grass and elsewhere.

Woah, nice.. I didn't know there was a MSX version. I want to see what that looks like.

*searches YouTube*

That's actually pretty impressive for a MSX game. It runs really smooth.

Only on the Turbo R...even on a 2+ there's tons of slowdown, unfortunately. Keeps me from enjoying it with my setup.
