Is there any sort of consensus on the best shmup OSTs?

Post by MrOldSchoolCool »

I can think of MUSHA which is pretty well liked for it's soundtrack (and yeah, I'm sure there's people who don't just like any OST).

No Offense. But a list of personal favorites doesn't really answer my question. Is that what those lists are?

Well, mine is half and half really.sounds like you need to do a poll to answer your question, otherwise you may well get bombarded with people's personal faves!

Would definitely be interesting to do a "top 25 shooter OSTs" poll.

I don't know if there's a consensus, but here are a few (by no means all) of the more commonly acclaimed composers on this board plus some of their higher-profile works:

Go Sato (Raiden II, Raiden Fighters)
Hisayoshi Ogura (Darius II, G-Darius)
Hitoshi Sakimoto (Radiant Silvergun, Soukyugurentai)
Kou Hayashi & Daiskuke Nagata aka KHDN (Radirgy, Karous)
Manabu Namiki (Battle Garegga, Ketsui)
Shinji Hosoe (Dragon Saber, Dragon Spirit)
Tamayo Kawamoto (Rayforce, Raystorm)
Tatsuya Uemura & Masahiro Yuge (many classic Toaplan OSTs, eg Kyuukyoku Tiger and Same! Same! Same!)
Yasuhisa Watanabe aka YACK (Metal Black, Border Down)

Tecno Soft's Tomomi Ootani, Toshiharu Yamanishi and Hyakutaro Tsukumo tend to get a lot of love, too. There's Konami's popular stable of OSTs too (Gradius, Salamander, etc) but I don't know many of the names involved other than Miki Higashino, Motoaki Furukawa and Nories Miura. "Konami Kukeiha Club" tends to get thrown around a lot more than I'd like.

New mistakes require new edits!

What's funny is that the music in Garegga and Layer Section both started to get on my nerves

Of course there is no consensus. It's music! You cannot measure which music is the best, since the only thing you can take into account is the subjective enjoyment of the listener. That's why personal recommendations make sense.

Hell yes it is.

I purchased the Ketui LE (Which came with this OST) before I had ever played DOJ. So, I listened to the CD, fell in love with it, bought DOJ within days... and nowadays find myself a little let down whenever I play the game in mame. I miss hearing those cool percussions to accompany teh chanting in Stage 1, and Ex ost's Stage 4 is still one of my favorite tracks ever.

Is there any sort of consensus on a single thing about shmups?
I guess lifebars tend to be frowned upon, but that's about it.

Nobody has bothered to do a poll because instead of a single person's opinion, you just get a collection of opinions watered down by trends, but it doesn't really gain any value unless you want it for scientific curiosity's sake. Nothing wrong with sticking with stuff you like and finding people whose opinions you trust. Speaking of this, MUSHA has some pretty good tracks, but I'd choose Techno Soft stuff ahead of Compile on the Genesis any day.

It's not lifebars that cause bad feelings, it's the crutch for shitty game design they can present. Koutetsu Teikoku is an example of a soundly-designed shooter with a lifebar. If you use the biplane anyway!

I personally don't listen to SHMUP OSTs because I believe the music makes much more sense in the context of the game. The music is often composed to go along with what's happening on the screen. I find that a bit of the magic gets lost by listening too much to the music alone.

My favorite is second stage in Battle Garegga, the music gets me as pumped EVERY time.

The only consensus in the community is a list of four games, with no unanimity on order:
- RayForce
- Layer Section
- Gunlock
- Galactic Attack

This is probably my favorite post in the forum.

But yes, Zuntata is on a whole other level, if only because there is nothing it can be compared to.

DDP DFK BL has probably the best shmup OST. I mean, I listen to this stuff from time to time on youtube and it's not even my style.

I've enjoyed Raystorm and Gradius V's OST myself; goes great with the game's intensity and atmosphere.
And despite the game itself, I believe the remixes of classics from Otomedius' soundtrack are noteworthy.

General consensus is that the quality level of shmup music across the board is extremely high. It is legitimately challenging to find a shmup that has genuinely bad music.

I can't speak for the community as a whole, but I find these soundtracks to be exceptional:

Battle Garegga OST - A love letter to 90's Detroit Techno.

Gradius 3 OST - Konami at their finest. Superb sound fidelity considering the arcade hardware available in '89.

Darius Gaiden OST - Zuntata's work on the Darius series has a very avant garde sound that has drawn critical acclaim. Zuntata has even performed the soundtrack live.

Thunder Force IV OST - Technosoft/Hyakutaro Tsukumo has a pretty hardcore cult following, especially among those who like metal.

I mean, I can just go on and on. When you finish listening to these, there's plenty more =P.
