Not sure what the game is.
The second player is an outside caller controlling the ship in the studio by dialing on their phone, while watching the game on the TV broadcast. Probably still better than a virtual D-pad.
Korean phone shmupping on a 90's game show
Re: Korean phone shmupping on a 90's game show
That's one elaborate way to play a shmup. And one insane way to fill TV channel hours! Amazing that really was a thing.

We did the same thing in Finland in the 90's, only we played Hugo.
Korea's game might be a smidgen better.

Well if I do remember correctly, Pretas, the game in question you are talking about is a Korean PC-DOS shmup called Illusion Blaze presented in 1994 by developer Family Production and publisher SKC Soft Land, if my memory serves me correctly.Pretas, who launched this interesting thread right here, wrote:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DzvWuEeRWBE

In fact, to show you even further on what I mean as a companion piece to this topic here, please take a look at this next YouTube video piece that shows a small bit of gameplay from another one of the levels of the game that I am talking about here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ri9AxDwhvCc
Although I have never even played the game myself, what I *do* know about it for sure is that it is a fairly interesting Korean take on Technosoft’s magnificent Thunder Force series on the way it truly plays, I will bet, namely TF III and IV. Did any of you people get a chance to play Illusion Blaze on DOS, curiously speaking?

And, insightful opening video you showed us by the way, Pretas... well done on that!

Now I see that Hugo footage, a distant memory of a UK Saturday morning kids' 'magazine show' (lots of bits and pieces + cartoons) has awoken within me. I think there were phone-controlled gaming sections to win prizes. I guess at the time that seemed pretty technologically futuristic.Ghegs wrote:We did the same thing in Finland in the 90's, only we played Hugo.

this is *very* cool. i think the game looks like a phone version of aero busters for sega megadrive. i don't know if it's just a similar look though.
