Who wants to translate the original Gynoug story?

Post by Skyknight »

http://segaretro.org/images/b/b5/Gynoug ... manual.pdf

TOOK long enough to ferret this out. And working with the katakana and kanji (via using Jeffrey's to find kanji that matched the furigana) supplied for the major enemies from the first two stages, I'm not expecting much matching with the story in the English and Portuguese manuals...

St. 1 mid-boss: Jimushi (Ground Insect). Not really matching "Dragoon", is it?
St. 1 boss: Ningen Kikansha (Humanoid Locomotive)
St. 2 mid-boss: Bits Creeper
St. 2 boss: Kaitei Senchou (Seafloor Captain)

Hmmm...From what I can get out of Bing (which isn't much), this is about a guardian mountain spirit attacking an armada of demons threatening his people's peaceful existence. Apparently, the demons are taking advantage of all the uncertainty surrounding sudden technological advances to manifest, using those feelings of dread and fear to actually take form. That certainly helps explain the steampunk look of some of the bosses.

Still not much explanation for where they came up with the title "Gynoug"...

Story

And I tried to determine the name of the boss(from http://www.nicovideo.jp/).

stage1 mid-boss: 地虫 - Jimushi - Ground Insect
stage1 boss: 人間機関車 - Ningen Kikansha - Humanoid Locomotive

stage2 mid-boss: ビッグローパー - Big Roper - Big Roper
stage2 boss: 海底船長 - Kaitei Senchou - Seafloor Captain

stage3 mid-boss: 人面龍 - JinmenRyu - Dragon With A Human Face
stage3 boss: メカ王様 - MekaOusama - Mecha King

stage4 mid-boss: ???
stage4 boss: 工場長 - Koujouchou - Plant manager

stage5 mid-boss: ガンジー - Ganji - Gandhi
stage5 boss: 女王 - Jouou - Queen

stage6 last-boss: ???

The st. 5 boss is named "Queen"? Considering how notorious its design is, this should get rather interesting...

Also, it's worth noting that st. 4 is called the Nikutai Seizou Koujou (Body Manufacturing Plant), and st. 5 is called the Mamono no Hara (Demons' Womb; the kanji used usually means "stomach", apparently, but it can also be used for "womb", and since the boss of that place is apparently the spawning queen...well...). So this lends more credence to my suspicions about the story--the demons are entering the world with human trepidation over progress as the catalyst, but they still want more powerful bodies, so they're making metal frames for themselves.

Cool topic - the story context makes the facility in stage 4 much less incongruous. I'll never look at Gynoug Dickman quite the same again. :o
