Dimahoo has got a really arcadey feel to it's presentation that I really like. It just feels very.... lively. From the constant voice audio (which I guess could be annoying) to the text that pops up to indicate everything you've picked up.
Any recommendations?

I can't believe that thread's not in the index of excellence already! And now that DP and Dangun have been mentioned, Thunder Dragon 2 can complete the holy trinity of STG announcers (BATWIDER guy is an apostle - MAHRVEROUS!)

Raiden Fighters original is great too, truly! And Viper Phase 1 is worth at least a try.
Speaking of older shooters with a neat presentation, UPL has a lot of stuff out there (go figure, NMK got mentioned too - no surprise). Stuff like Omega Fighter, especially the Special version. Ark Area, if you want to go older and a bit simpler.
Special games...Batsugun, Darius Gaiden.
Dimahoo is, of course, third in a trilogy of games - Mahou Daisakusen / Sorcer Striker, Shippu Mahou Daisakusen / Kingdom Grandprix being the first two. Following that, you have the also very lively Soukyugurentai lock-on lazar spectacular.
Data East (Ragtime Show), Taito (Rays series, Gekirindan) and Toaplan made some good stuff along these lines too, as did Taito licensee Seta (Twin Eagle 2 is the most amazing thing ever seen).
Nichibutsu is, along with Namco, Konami, Capcom, and Irem, one of the granddaddies of the shmups genre, and in games with great presentation. Ninja Emaki is very good, although a bit easy (try Youma Ninpou Chou for a challenge). Namco: Many big colorful shmups. Konami: Many games with "whoa here's the big one!" moments, even on handheld as with Gradius II / Interstellar Assault. Capcom: Too many to mention. Irem: Plenty here too.
