These shmups are considered to be the best of the best for each of the three most popular system back in the late 80's and early 90's. If you had to live with just one of the top 5s, which package would you choose and why?
Genesis/Mega Drive
1. Thunder Force 3 - Considered the best shooter on the Gen by many and has helped the system take off as one of the best system for shooters.
2. Tunder Force IV - Pretty much like T3 but is faster, tougher and a lot prettier graphics wise.
3. Elimidate Down - A highly quality hori shooter that not too many people know about back in the days. Great balance of graphics, gameplay and sound.
4. M.U.S.H.A - One of the first Genesis shooter that display what the system is capable of producing. Amazing for a first generation shooter and has aged really well.
5. Gaires - One of the toughest shooter on the Gen with a unique weapon system. Some loves it , others hate it.

SNES
1. Space Mega Force - Has a Blazing Lazer feel to it which is a good thing. Has an abundant of power-ups with lots of enemies/bullets on screen at once with very little slow downw hich is rare on the Snes.
2. Axley - A very high quality shooter that came out way ahead of its time, considering how great the graphics were and uses the mode 7 effect for the vert levels...b/c of this some people loves it other hate it.
3. R-Type 3 - A follow up to the disappointing Super R-type. This one is better in everyway and is considered by many as the best of the R-types.
4. Macross, Scrambled Valkyrie - Possibly the best macross style shooter that has the total package in gameplay, graphics and sounds. One of the best on the snes that never came over to the state.
5. Gradius 3 - The first really good SNES shooter despite its occasional slow down. Staying true to the Gradius root, the gameplay is intact with some of the best weapon system around and you could edit them!

PCE/TG-16
1. Gate OF Thunder - A Thunder Force rival that has killer gameplay, graphics and music. The best hori shooter of all time? Maybe....
2. Lords OF Thunder - More of the same but everything is improved upon.
3. Spriggan - Plays and feel like Musha and thats a good thing. One of Compile's best and since its on a CD format, the music is great.
4. Blazing Lazer - The most pupular shooter on the T-16. Simple but effective gameplay and one of Compile's first shooter. It was amazing when it first came out in Japan along with R-type....no other console shooter looked this good at the time(89).
5. R-Type - The original R-Type that's arcade perfect and was the main reason why the PCE was selling like pancakes and solidifies itself as the number one system in Japan for a long time.
Battle of the top 5's for the Gen,Snes and PCE.

Lords of Thunder is actually quite different from Gate of Thunder.nsonthi77@hotmail.com wrote:2. Lords OF Thunder - More of the same but everything is improved upon.

Spriggan feels a bit like Musha Aleste, but the gameplay (specifically the weapons system) is very different.
And Gunhed is not one of Compile's first shooters. In fact it was their 15th shooter.

Anyway, I can't make a choice out of the three sets you provide. They're all must-have games, so it's all-or-nothing for me.
typical western male insecurity? my top five list is a lot cuter than these.Turrican wrote:Why do I always get the feeling that cuteemups are always left out from these competition threads? Only space ships with big guns allowed.
How can you mention Snes without mentioning Pop'n Twinbee, or PCE without Detana!! or Star Paroder... is beyond me.
and my pce top five definitely includes atomic robo kid special.
That's a good point. Especially every PCE top-5 list should include at least one of the great cute 'em ups, such as Star Parodier or Magical Chase.Turrican wrote:Why do I always get the feeling that cuteemups are always left out from these competition threads?
