Why do people love the scoring system in Gunbird 2 so much?
How should I approach the coin chaining? Any advice? I'm finding it frustrating but I know people love it.
Re: Why do people love the scoring system in Gunbird 2 so mu
Good question. I absolutely hate the stupid coin timing chaining shit. I avoid playing Psikyo games for score because of it :V

You pick them up when they turn white.
Coins are unimportant if you're starting out with the game. Focus on getting as far as you can, then try to incorporate gem heads, then mix chaining in when it's safe.

Yeah, Psikyo's games are fun, but they're in spite of the coin chaining I think, not because of it. You can ignore the coin chaining and enjoy the game a lot more, especially if you're just getting used to it. Not sure where you got the impression the coin chaining is 'loved'.

Because the games are focused around survival, and then there is this extra-hard challenge in there for people who have gotten good at surviving a Psikyo game (note: I am not one of those people).
Basically, if you are playing Gunbird 2, don't focus on anything but getting through the stages until you can semi-get-through the game.

Item chaining is my favorite part of Gunbird 2 and Strikers 1999. It's very satisfying when you can get a precise collecting rhythm going and maintain it, all while dodging intense patterns.
It's nice that Psikyo was able to develop a distinctive scoring mechanic of their own across multiple games, much like Cave's enemy chaining and Raizing's medaling. I still prefer Dragon Blaze and Zero Gunner 2 overall, though.

Medal chaining in Psikyo is awesome. It rewards good execution and route planning, though it's nowhere near as restrictive as enemy chaining in DDP. Dunno why anyone would dislike it.

I think I just got the impression from the fact that it's always the top-rated psikyo game on the top 25 lists and it was the first game to introduce the medal chaining.BareknuckleRoo wrote:Yeah, Psikyo's games are fun, but they're in spite of the coin chaining I think, not because of it. I prefer Strikers 2, 3, and both Zero Gunner games myself. I don't remember any of them having good scoring though.

I like that missing a coin flash doesn't collapse a scoring run like a house of cards.

It's ridiculously simple, it's easy to begin incorporating it into your survival runs and it's forgiving enough that you only lose chain by picking up a non-flashing coin.
Its only shortcoming, I find, is that it sounds quite an unimpressive premise , no blasting lots of stuff with lasers, no making sure no second goes by without blasting stuff up, it's all about sitting besides flashy stuff until they flash and keeping your bling-spree.

Setting the difficulty to "Monkey" is a fun way to go for a perfect coin run.
I've had a lot of fun playing that way in both Strikers 1945 II and Gunbird 2.

it does in gunbird 2. part of the end of game bonus comes from the length of your best coin chain.DJ Incompetent wrote:I like that missing a coin flash doesn't collapse a scoring run like a house of cards.
strikers 1999 almost has no chaining at all in comparison.

At least the coins keep spinning for an extra pickup chance in case you just miss the timing. I remember trying to collect Raiden DX one-flash medals and gasping at how hard it is to exploit.

If not the coin chaining, what makes Gunbird 2 better than Gunbird 1?
Re: Why do people love the scoring system in Gunbird 2 so mu
Pace? Patterns? Gunbird is such a ghost town, Gunbird 2 feels so much more alive and engaging.
Re: Why do people love the scoring system in Gunbird 2 so mu
Everything else? GB doesn't even have melee/charged attacks.MrOldSchoolCool wrote:If not the coin chaining, what makes Gunbird 2 better than Gunbird 1?

Raiden Fighters games say hi! Its scoring mechanic can be annoying, and it can be very demanding on your route. At the same time, it's quite fun. It's interesting that freedom of movement and (what I perceive to be) fun scoring are sometimes at odds. As Eno put it, coin chaining doesn't focus on blasting tons of stuff with lasers, which is a distinct shortcoming. I like the scoring premise of games like RayForce and even Mars Matrix better for this reason.
The scoring mechanic seems to change from one Aero Fighters game to another, but the "hug the screen edge for pickups can be good. Again, though, it necessarily can limit your scoring options, and naturally emphasizes foreknowledge more than I like.
I also don't usually like charge attacks in my shmups. It is a simple way to introduce a risk/reward tradeoff into the game, but it often doesn't click with me. Guess I like shooting on full autofire like a scrub too much

Wrong! It has charge attacks.GB doesn't even have melee/charged attacks.

I like GB1 more by the way. I love coin chaining but I prefer GB1's ultra aggressive style.

I found chaining in Gunbird 2 incredibly frustrating at first, but in the end I enjoyed how it gave you something extra to do in the easier early stages. When the game gets really hard, I'm too busy trying to survive to worry about chaining.

Not to mention all the crazy and wacky single player and co-op crossover stories between all the characters presented within Gunbird 2...Psikyo has to be commended for making sure that tying up all the loose ends remain in top notch form with their unique sense of humor. Only if Psikyo did Gunbird 3 as their swan song arcade PCB release instead of Dragon Blaze -- it'd be hard to top with what is offered in GB2 (unless more new characters are added to the roster and the occassional new-fangled Psikyo game mechanic to add a new wrinkle to the gameplay to spice things up + more zany stories and arcing stories to read/gloss over that adds to the overall quirky Gunbird franchise/universe). It's a fun romp to take out the ol' Gunbird 2 PCB out for a spin from time to time.

Mind = blown. Turns out I just never had the patience to hold down the shot button long enough, those are some quite high charging times for everyone but Yuan Nang.chempop wrote:Wrong! It has charge attacks.GB doesn't even have melee/charged attacks.
Re: Why do people love the scoring system in Gunbird 2 so mu
You can start charging during a charge attack animation. So in cases of long charge times like Valnus, once you do the first charge attack the rest come out quite fast, and every one of them hurts.

Oh that's nice, thanks for the info.Hagane wrote:You can start charging during a charge attack animation. So in cases of long charge times like Valnus, once you do the first charge attack the rest come out quite fast, and every one of them hurts.
And since the damage is done already anyway, is button 3 supposed to do something?

Simple answer: They don't. Everyone hates Psikyo scoring. Make a poll and you'll get at least 80% of full hate. Why do people love the scoring system in Gunbird 2 so much?
I think it's alright though.

Re: Why do people love the scoring system in Gunbird 2 so mu
One virtue is that the scoring systems are relatively simple. Hidden scoring (e.g. gem heads) is non-obvious, but still simple. And that's one of the key virtues of Psikyo shooters generally: pick-up-n-play goodness.
