Gigawing 2: Is it worth it?

Post by Jedah Doma »

I started playing Gigawing again for the DC. I've been cycling through many of my shooters lately and have been having some fun with this game. At this point, I'm trying to fill in my collection. So, I say all that to basically ask if Gigawing 2 is even worth a purchase. I saw very little about this game when it came out. I'm not sure if I even saw it in stores myself. I heard about the 4 player feature. It sounds cool, but at the same time, how do you find 3 other shmups freaks to join you in a game?

So, in the end, is it worth it, or should I just move on?

Great people I've had deals with:
superhitachi4, KyleRXZero, Canadianzombie, Wanderer, and Strider77.

LOL, we just played a 4 player Gigawing 2 game today during the SF Bay Area shmupmeet. It was crazy fun! Kinda hard to keep track of your ship with 3 other players. Its still worth the purchase for single player alone IMHO.

Since this game is in my Naomi Cabinet right now I must say this game gets my APPROVAL BIG TIME. Its fun no matter how many players there are. Plus this game looks amazing in High REZ. Some of the finest graphics this side of Ikaruga. Plus the Orchestral Soundtrack is EPIC for a 2D shmup.

The game has a slightly lower pace than Giga Wing, but works in a pretty different way.Basically the difference is volcanons: once you have n medals on screen, you will have medals to be split in more medals ( one +1 medal becomes 3 +3 medals, for instead). This will cause your multiplier to ky-rocket, if you can trigger volcanons consistently. In case, here's a detailed guide. Aside the gameplay's high quality, it features a nice steampunk setting and excellent orchestral music (but i've put here a review of the title. It's highly suggested, and a copy of the jp version should be around 50$, but anyone with a better knowledge of prices should correct me.

imho, GW2 has better gameplay, varied Reflect Laser ability, more scoring opportunities, and a much better soundtrack. well worth the purchase, i'd say, though i don't own a legitimate copy myself. ^^;;

EDIT: oh yeah, forgot to mention, the 4-player mode is a blast. you can't take it seriously though... some friends and i RAPED that game on numerous occasions. ^^; added enemy HP and added bullet-hell would have been greatly appreciated... but it DOES make for a fun shmupping get-together. ^^

GW2 is actually a bit more "unorthodox" than GW1 (or GWG for that matter), in that you really don't have to shoot that much; since you need to reflect enough stuff to trigger volcanons to really make a dent in your score, shooting stuff down looks almost worthless in comparison, at least if you're playing for score. I generally like the game, but it's a bit trickier to find and more expensive than the first GW (the US versions, at least), though there are deals if you're patient (I got mine, excellent condition and complete, for about 15-20 bucks). Personally I'd wait for a deal, but others obviously disagree with me.

I might say that GW2 is my least favorite in the series, but this is in no way a criticism. It's more a way of praising the other entires in the series.

I find myself playing the DC versions of GW 1, and 2 quite a bit. I'd recommend buying either. Great games, and plenty of bullet spam (especially in GW 1). ;)

The second is my favorite when comparing it to the first. Graphics are about the same if not better. Scoring mechanics are a bit tweaked, a little deeper; better. Music is tops. Very orchestral. One of the first things that really struck me about the game when I first purchased it. The four player feature is kind of pointless really, especialy when you play with people that don't play shooters. It's just a reflect and bomb fest. Mindless fun for a few minutes if anything. The ability to have a four ship formation while playing one player is an intersting one though.

So yeah, all things considered, it's definitely worth buying. Great shooter to add to your collection.

Oh, and I have yet to play Generations... probably never will unfortunately. So I really can't compare it in that respect.

Go buy it. ;)

Yes, worth it, go buy it! Most of the other posts will tell you why and point you to the reviews. But it gets the thumbs up from me!

GW2 is excellent. Beautiful Naomi crafted visuals, epic orchestral soundtrack, and triggering medal storms is a lot of fun. The reflect lzaers mix things up nicely.

I still like GW1 a bit more but that is mainly nostalgia and the fact there is a bit more gunplay.

So in other words, get it.

Buy It

Yes, it is well-worth it. I agree with a lot of the guys on this. In fact, it is my favorite shmup of all-time. Hands-down. Great graphics, fun gameplay, perfect difficulty, nice ship design, fantastic audio, good story, and best of all, it's 4-players. Takumi is a developing god, and GW2 shows why. GW2 is a perfect shooting game. Get it.

The music that is playing in the first level for Limi, then ends and another piece starts as the boss drops from above. Aaah!

I would buy a copy just to see that again and again.

Why is GigaWing 2 more expensive/harder to find then GigaWing 1?

Just less copies produced?

I was able to pick up GW 1 for $15 brand new still in the shrink wrap. The best price I can find on GW2 is around $50 and that's for a used copy.

As I said in my first post there are deals on GW2 if you're willing to be patient. I think I saw a copy or two on eBay for about 20-25 bucks, though I'm not sure if they're disc-only or not, I didn't take a closer look at them.

the soundtrack is fantastic though plagiarised from Mozart a little too much.
Its also the first time ive been impressed by the usr of 3D in a shooter, The level with all the boat like ships looks and feels great to play.
Generations is a shitty mess.

I never played Gigawings 2, but if it is anywhere as good as the first one, then I am pretty sure it is a great game...

They improved on GW2 in every way; control is quicker, reflect barrier is refined, even more bullets, and it's 4-Players. It's great; highly recommended. It's an absolute blast with friends, and even in 1-Player it's a blast. Ship designs are also great!

Also, when you pick a version of Giga Wing 2 for Dreamcast to buy, remember this:

Japan version - voices in the menus, cutscenes, and in game (when you bomb or reflect), cutscenes are in Japanese

U.S. version - all voices removed from the game, cutscenes are in English

Is there a review of this at shmups.com? It seems there should be.
