Faint horizontal lines using PS2 help?

Post by Tyrone Burton »

Hello guys, hope you can help me out. I'm basically running a PS2 slim using an official Sony component cable, through an AVR, and outputted via HDMI to a projector. What I'm seeing when I do this are moving horizontal lines going either upwards or down the screen, quite hard to miss. This doesn't happen if I connect the component cables directly to the projector, it only happens when I have them throght the AVR and then converted to HDMI for output.

Is there a way to get around fixing this? It seems to me it's just a problem inherent in the PS2.

sorry, wanted to answer you on the AVS board, but forgot about it...

There's likely nothing you can. The PS2's component signal has a lot of video noise, fluctuating DC voltage if you like, and all A/D stages react differently to it. Some filter it out completely (your projector), while others are very sensitive to it (like your AVR).

Depending on the kind of content you want to play (480i/480p PS2 games or 240p PS1 games) you could try a HDMI dongle for the PS2. There are some that just do the A/D conversion for you, while others do upscale on their one - avoid the latter ones. This way you could use a HDMI connection to your AVR and from my experience with those, they handle the PS2's noise quite good.

Thanks for the reply, I'll definetly try your suggestion as its nice to have everything in one place on the AVR. Before I go, is it normal for the PS2 to be ok when displaying progressive signals?, testing some 480p supported games like Beyond Good & Evil, the lines completely disappear.

usually the noise level is the same, but your processor might react differently to the different scanning frequencies. If you have any other HDMI source with 480i (maybe your DVD or BD player) and it shows fine on the AVR, then a PS2 through a HDMI dongle should be fine as well.

Thank you very much Fudoh. I'll post back as soon as I receive and try out the dongle.

Sorry to hijack such an old post but I was wondering if a XRGB Mini would help filter out the faint lines on the PS2? I'm looking into purchasing one for my older 240p consoles. I noticed you can get a D-Terminal to Component adapter for the PS2/XBOX/Wii/etc.
