PS2 - SLG3000 or SLGHD?

Hey everyone,

I'm not sure which setup to go with for my PS2? I'm thinking that using the SLGHD with component output from the PS2 is ideal, but I am concerned about a couple things, one, if a game isn't in progressive scan, would I run into issues with the scan lines being incorrect, and two, are the scan lines on the PS2 too light?

This is my first attempt at a project using scan lines.

What are some of your setups? Would the SLGHD be all that I need?

All scanline devices out there are only intended for 31khz (480p and 576p) sources. If you feed 240p or 480i (both 15khz) into the SLG-HD, you get only half the scanlines and it won't look correct. The SLG-HD will pass the signal though and you can switch the scanlines off.

If you have a VGA input on your TV or monitor I would recommend a SLG3000 instead. If you use a $35 HDBoxPro clone from Monoprice as a component to VGA converter, you can apply scanlines to all your games, no matter if 240p, 480i or 480p.

Hey Fudoh, that Monoprice box (I'm assuming you mean this one?) --

It mentions it does VGA passthrough from your computer, which is cool -- does it also do audio passthrough? I noticed that the component input has stereo RCA connectors, but there is also a 3.5mm input, I'm assuming you would connect your computer audio here and then your speakers would plug into the output?

yes & yes. But I have no idea what the passthrough quality looks like. Who uses VGA for their PC connection these days ?

I am, since I'm using the DVI input on my monitor for HDMI->DVI output from my 360.

Honestly I don't notice any difference between VGA and DVI output from my computer.

Anyway, thanks for the info, didn't want to hijack the thread :wink:

Using DVI for the PC and VGA for the 360 instead allows you to use a SLG3000 with the 360 :mrgreen:

Thanks for the replies. Very helpful.

It seems like the PS2 didn't have many 480p native games, but GameCube/Wii and the original Xbox did. Would it be okay to use the SLGHD on GC/Wii and Xbox without issue? (I'm grouping GC and Wii together because I would most likely just use the Wii).

Same answer as above: if your TV or monitor has VGA, go that route instead. For 480p component signals you can use a transcoder. The Monoprice box mentioned will act as one.

Granted it wouldn't be as flexible as a general component->VGA transcoder ...

they're fine. Basically just a transcoder chip built into the cable.

So, I'm guessing the SLGHD would be more for current gen systems, like PS3, for use when we want to play retro downloaded games or just add them for effect to current gen games?

In parts, for PS3 it's a valid argument, but especially for the 360 the SLG-HD was intended for users who simply can't use VGA.
