PC Engine shmups in high resolution mode
PC Engine shmups in high resolution mode
Maybe you all know about this already, but this is new to me. A guy I know on YouTube made a video on how to unlock the "arcade mode" in several PCE shmups:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MEGSyuRahVk
The PCE isn't capable of tate mode, but this higher resolution mode is as close as you can get. Some games like Burning Angels has this as selectable in the options screen, while most of them require controller input combinations or passwords.
This guy has a hilariously bizarre and random sense of humor.
Here's a link to an article featuring the information on these games.

Re: PC Engine shmups in high resolution mode
I heard about it recently as well.
However, if this supposed arcade resolution is the one you get in Burning Angels, then no thanks. Original resolution is much better (at least in BA).

Re: PC Engine shmups in high resolution mode
One of those cool Turbo Everdrive flash carts loaded up with the aforementioned PCE STG titles with the special high-res mode will certainly do the trick on a PCE or TG-16 setup.
Plus using an Arcade Card Duo with an PCE Duo-RX setup with a copy of the classic CD-Rom2 game of Spriggan will net a slick overall framerate boost on both the opening intro and with the in-game engine as well. Works wonders for me.
It'd be interesting to have proper tate enabled on a modern-day homebrew PCE STG. Perhaps, with the upcoming PCE STG of Xymati could make use of proper tate mode. I was told that it will be released as a CD (it seems that it'd be best released as a Super CD-Rom2 title but if the additional 16 megabits of RAM could to utilized with an Arcade Card Duo or Arcade Card Pro setup, that'd be a first for such a homebrew PCE STG indeed -- aside from the only Arcade CD-Rom2 STG title of Ginga Fukei Densetsu Sapphire from the likes of Hudson Soft back in December of 1995).
PCE Cyber Core Factoid: More than one code can be entered on the classic PCE/TG-16 STG of Cyber Core...virtually an unlimited amount of codes can be entered before the start of a serious session. It's a given even though this little-known CC factoid is mentioned on the Net. Just enter the desired number of codes and press the Run button to start off with Arcade Mode enabled from the get-go, fully powered up, start on a chosen stage, invincibility mode enabled, etc. Mix 'n' match CC codes to your liking. Easy as pie.

Re: PC Engine shmups in high resolution mode
It's hardly "high resolution"!
Re: PC Engine shmups in high resolution mode
High resolution with just a plug-in RAM card?
Smells fishy to me.

The Ram Card just boosts the framerate of Spriggan compared to it's regular framerate without it. Give it a spin yourself, Ed. There's absolutely no high-res mode to be found with Spriggan anyways.

Re: PC Engine shmups in high resolution mode
My comment was to the term being quite blatantly used incorrectly as a whole - i.e. the topic.
Re: PC Engine shmups in high resolution mode
It actually is high resolution though. PCE normally displays 256 pixels across, but also has a high resolution mode that is 320 pixels across. Vertical resolution stays the same.

That video was awesomer than all the hours of Retsupurae I've watched, and informational too!

Re: PC Engine shmups in high resolution mode
Lots of games have this 'arcade mode' right off the bat, no codes needed! Star Parodier, Soldier Blade, Nexzr come to mind. But, I think the aspect ratio is really made for the lower resolution mode. They look kinda screwy in the fake-tate option IMO.
I think this only qualifies as 'high resolution' in 1982, man
That's back when low resolution was 160 across. For a late-80s system it's more like a mild bump up in res.
Shame more systems that generation weren't 320 across on all the games (makes sense on PCE since it's 8-bit). I think the Genesis is the only one..? SNES is 256 for most stuff, right?

Ah, so he is on here! There's another YT acquaintance of mine who is really into shmups, but he isn't on this forum. I guess I had the two confused.

Re: PC Engine shmups in high resolution mode
Well if you did that Cyber Core 1cc without the hi-res mode, then you missed out big time. As that game seems to be the only one in this "Arcade/Hi-Res" mode with very small borders, and of course, higher resolution for a much clearer image.Kollision wrote:I heard about it recently as well.

I'd still check out all other games individually as you get to them to see if it's better or not for yourself firsthand, just to be sure. Here's a very dandy well done starter list; http://www.tg-16.com/arcade-mode-high-r ... shmups.htm
There a few missed on that list, so just double check with GameFAQs cheats section too. It's what I always do.
