Describe your boner for the Breaking Bad return...
I have to work today and won't get to watch until tonight, so mine is only mildly firm, but I'm pretty sure longevity is going to be where it shines.

Purple, veiny, and throbbing.
I'm doing my best to resist watching so I can save a few up for the 13-hour flight back to Tokyo.
edit: I a word.

Soft and flaccid, kinda like a vienna sausage. I've never watched it.

Should add, I've not been following the return hype though. I'll probably wait until it's done then marathon it like I did s1-4 and s5a. No withdrawal symptoms and it's not like I don't have schooling pounding my ass until then anyway.

Better than a hairy man pounding your ass I suppose.
I respect the marathon, but all my friends are going to be jizzing in their pants on FB and in bars, so I have to watch it weekly.

Since every mofo keeps talking about this and Paul has been telling me to watch it incessantly, I'll try to marathon this shit when I'm back in London. How many seasons are there?

Is Low Winter Sun worth trying?
Thanks so much for the spoiler alert. No shit, this is my FB status update from earlier today:
2-4 are 13 episodes
and 5 is 8 episodes x2. We've waited a year for the last 8.
The time goes fast -- it's an easy watch, but you will be worked up after a little over half the episodes I'd say. Not the best bed time watching.

Time to say good bye for the day internet, as some of my dip shit friends wouldn't know a spoiler if it came up and bit them in the balls.

The Wire is much slower but also worth it. Breaking Bad is more linear and better for a marathon. IMHO.Skykid wrote:What's The Wire like? Better or worse than BB?

Re: Describe your boner for the Breaking Bad return...
I watched the first series of Breaking Bad about a year ago. Was pretty fun and breezy, think I have season 2 on DVD somewhere but not really too enthused.
Saw The Wire for the first time in 2010, marathoned the whole thing thrice in total. Very much uncompromising when it comes to narrative, reccomend watching an episode a day without breaking between series. Can't reccomend it highly enough. It's nothing like any other gangster/ police procedural text if that worries you. Charlie Brooker once said he's jealous of anyone who's yet to watch The Wire and I'd have to agree.
Maybe it's because of the enormous expectations I had, but Breaking Bad seemed far too sentimental for my tastes. (which isn't always a bad thing. On series 2 of Game Of Thrones which I love, but it oftentimes seems a little big TOO nihilistic and overwraught to honestly enjoy, sort of like a Ken Loach or Lukas Moodyson show with dragons) I'll watch the other four series of Breaking Bad and I'll undoubtably enjoy them too.

I wasn't aware Breaking Bad was gone for any length of time.
Never saw the show personally. When I saw commercials, my first thought was "Oh boy, a channel dedicated to classic movies is now running an original series... where have I seen that before?"

That, and that nothing American has been good in the last ten years, led me to avoiding it.

Understand the show is from Vince Gilligan, a principle X-Files writer. No wonder it's good.

Re: Describe your boner for the Breaking Bad return...
I hated the X-Files. Stupid whiny Mulder, stupid fake-skeptic Scully, and incredibly forced downer-endings-just-for-the-sake-of-being-downers, the anti-intellectualism and new age bullshit was all over the place. The conspiracy was just so hard to take seriously (speaking as a guy who reads Tom Clancy and is on his second reading of Romance of the Three Kingdoms, there's no way the government as depicted in X-Files could ever possibly exist, even if we assume they're using paranormal elements)...Skykid wrote:Understand the show is from Vince Gilligan, a principle X-Files writer. ... What pissed me off most was I actually used to have an interest in the subject matter the show covers--Alien Abductions, paranormal stuff etc. Hell, I loved those episodes of Unsolved Mysteries. But X-Files took those elements and ran them into the ground, turning them into the most balls-stupid and lame things ever. It practically ruined all the mythology it revolved around.

Actually if you are at all exposed to the new age/conspiracy crowd, X-Files becomes pretty unlikable. Truth is, it's just entertainment, and on those grounds I can enjoy it in a sort of post twin-peaks-lite sort of thing. There was certainly talent associated with the show, it just wasn't the right show for me...because, yeah, I know people who take all this conspiracy theory bullshit seriously.Skykid wrote:Then you have no taste whatsoever.Edmond Dantes wrote: I hated the X-Files.

Re: Describe your boner for the Breaking Bad return...
There was far less conspiracy theory bullshit when it actually aired. The Internet went much further than sci-fi post X-Files, which never expressly dealt with Freemasonry.
Regardless, it remains one of the finest shows ever devised an executed. If the ongoing central themes surrounding the main characters don't do much for you, its standalone thriller episodes (which are the majority) are usually exceptional and occasionally masterful. Honestly, I can't see how anyone who knuckles down it can really dislike it, even if they decide it's not their thing. I've often handpicked episodes to show to people who never bothered with the show, and they've been amazed.
Go for episodes 'Drive' and 'Home', both latecomers, if you want to be surprised.

Throbbing to such an extent that I feel the need to take it to Bogdan's car wash, clasp it in my hands and exclaim: "Wipe this down" menacingly.
Re: Describe your boner for the Breaking Bad return...
Semi hard. However, I've not watched a single episode of season five yet. As I knew the "break" in the middle of the season would kill me.
When the last ep or close to it airs.......my sleep is fucked for a week I spose.

The Wire is the pinnacle of modern storytelling, but it's a very unconventional show and needs your complete, undivided attention.Skykid wrote:What's The Wire like? Better or worse than BB?
Breaking Bad is the pinnacle of well-structured and easy to get into drama.
Think Dostoyevsky vs. Joseph Heller. Hard to compare the two in terms of quality, but if I had to rank them, The Wire would win out.
On topic (and quoting The Wire, to boot!): 'blue steel, gentlemen'. The season premiere was outstanding.

Re: Describe your boner for the Breaking Bad return...
Actually no, there wasn't. Shows like Unsolved Mysteries, Sightings and Paranormal Borderline were all the rage and preceded X-Files by a few years, and before that there was print--authors like Budd Hopkins, John Keel and Whitley Strieber were around since the 70s at least.Skykid wrote:There was far less conspiracy theory bullshit when it actually aired.
If anything, there's less of that stuff than their used to be (which I don't blame X-Files for. It's more likely that paranormal stuff was a fad that people simply got bored of).

Been looking forward to this for months. I rewatched the series this week to get up to speed and the premiere pretty much met my expectations. The first and last five minutes were awesome.
