5'10, 170lbs (160 seems to be about ideal for me). Good health habits: Cutting down on ambient sugar/salt intake (like the amount of sugar you get at restaurants or in pre-made sauces/dressing), distance running, occasional-and-casual weight lifting.

Yeah, that was actually my big shock when I started changing my diet. I'm now back to my old ways (and gained some lbs to match), but for a while I'd cut down the sheer amount I was eating by a lot and felt totally fine.
One thing I've noticed too re: sugar is that if I stop having it for a while, I stop craving it. I think developing a palette that leans more towards spicy/savory/bitter than sweet/salty does a lot for you. Like a lot of hot sauces and mustards are sugar-free, where other sauces like ketchup are not.

I could see how that could be a really huge source of pride, because for some people losing weight is really hard. But yeah, it can get old if someone's always talking about it.
Though, I will say this: When my friends went through a fitness phase, one of them did me a huge favor by pointing out how crappy the french fries I was scarfing down were for me. It seriously got me to start considering my diet.
