EDTV a wise choice for Gamecube/PS2/Xbox/Wii?

Just found out they made EDTV's larger than the ~14-20" 4:3 LCD's I've seen a bunch- namely some Panasonic and Sony plasmas. Would these be a good option to play 480p consoles on? I hate the scaling my 1080p TV puts these through, and I feel like I'm wasting the potential of the Gamecube component cables I recently snagged on my 480i Trinitron (though of course it still looks beautiful). Since I've never seen/used an EDTV before can anybody enlighten me? Is there lots of input lag for native res content? Does 480p stuff look better on one than a nice 480i CRT?

Read the opening post here http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=43256 I've reviewed a Pioneer 40" 4:3 plasma set there. The Panasonic sets are nice as well, although they're 16:9 and not 4:3. 16:9 480p sets have been out of production for many years now, but the Panasonic ones are probably your best shot at getting one.

480p on a Plasma will look way better than 480i on a CRT, but I don't see how upscaling to 1080p hurts your picture. It's usually all the other processing and A/D conversions that don't look so hot.

Thanks, that's a very enlightening post. Good to know there's practically no lag with these older plasmas, and good 240p handling is good as well. Problem is, I've yet to see a 4:3 EDTV here in the states that was larger than 20", and I'll take the additional 12 my Trinitron gives me over progressive scan at those sizes any day. So the 16:9 ones are my only option, and I'm worried showing 4:3 stuff most of the time will cause some uneven aging on the panel, unless the one I get happens to have an option to color the blank space.

And I've got a pretty cheap TV, Insignia brand, that must not have a very good upscaler built in. There's noticeable lag added and it just sorta makes things look... Weird.
