Ship Design

Post by todor0v »

Hello, I'm new here and I need some advice regarding the design of my aircraft.
I plan to make a 2D vertical scrolling shmup in flash and here is the sketch of the player's ship. what do you say about the design, is it worth continuing on this design or should I try something else? it's not a space ship, it's an atmospheric fighter.
thank you

Hmm -- it's not a bad ship, but I think it could be considerably more phallic. Have a look at the R-Type ship for instance:

Battle Garegga, another classic, also gets the job done:

The Yakouga games are a bit more direct on this front, but they're always a great source of inspiration.

On a more serious note though, I think it would look a bit more slick if the two outside "heads" (of the three spires in the front) were a bit smaller, to make the cockpit stand out more, and maybe the "tail feathers" were faced just a bit more back. Take my suggestions with a grain of salt though. I'm not a ship designer. What color scheme are you going to go for?

The opposite could also work: of the three very similar front protrusions, the middle one could become much shorter (less than half) and more like a cockpit, and the side ones could become a little longer and a lot more menacing (possibly converging at the front for a more, ehm, feminine style).
The back seems very compressed, can't you place the wings apart from the front elements (and maybe from each other) along a somewhat streamlined fuselage?
