Amazon shipping costs went up overnight!

Post by xbl0x180 »

What the hell?! I was perusing through my music wishlists and adding stuff into my cart when I noticed that everything was 3.99 to ship per item (US). When I clicked my shopping cart, I noticed that everything was 3.99 to ship! Fuck that. I deleted everything off of it. The last time shipping went up, I recall was back in 2005 or 2006, but it was a 50-cent jump. Now it's a whole fucking dollar. Whatever used to be a bargain to buy is now on the level with regular retailers. Shit, I could go to Amoeba or any used music store and buy the same things for less again! 8)

Yeah, I thought I noticed this the other night. It kind of makes sense from the sellers standpoint, though. Amazon and eBay never credit you enough for shipping. I always get hosed.

On the bright side, this was just enough to discourage me from buying. I will buy less from Amazon and their sellers now 8)

Considering he said it's now jumped a whole dollar I assume he meant that it used to be 2.99.

Shipping went up overnight [after eight years]

I buy infrequently and usually buy more than one item at a time, so a small shipping increase won't kill me. If I placed a lot of orders, I'd probably just opt for Amazon Prime though.

Yeah, my angry, jittery fingers couldn't allow me to type "each item I placed on the cart was $3.99 to ship." I had about 12 items total, so that was a $12 increase on a normal order. At this point, I'll forget about buying anything from Amazon unless it's free bulk shipping 8)

Do you not have prime? Honestly, I've probably saved tons on shipping at this point with prime, after figuring in the cost and the usual price of shipping.

Or just have $25 in each order to qualify for free shipping. I definitely wouldn't pay even $3 for shipping unless it was an emergency situation (which I usually wouldn't use Amazon for in the first place).

Yeah, I have Prime, and love it. Especially now that Amazon is really expanding their streaming video library available at no extra cost with it. Costs me less per year than a $7.99/month Netflix subscription, and gets me free 2 day shipping on nearly anything I buy.

I used to have Prime for the one free year, then they wanted to charge me for it, so I cancelled it 8)

I usually just wait until I have $25 worth of stuff to order and get the free shipping. It takes forever but it's free. Is Prime video really anywhere near as good as Netflix? Even Netflix doesn't have the amount of quality stuff that they used to since they lost their deal with Starz.

As a movie fanatic, nothing out there beats netfix. Amazon is mediocre for meeting my movie-watching needs since I don't stream anything. I will always prefer the disc, esp. if it has special features included - which I make sure to watch after the movie 8)

I'm trying to see if I can enroll in a class, get one more Associate's Degree, and see if I can enroll for another free year of Amazon Prime in the process. Otherwise, I'm not paying for any of it and I'll just avoid buying from Amazon from now on.

I think he's more so talking about buying from Amazon sellers, not stores affiliated or Amazon themselves. Most Amazon stores don't offer prime with a lot of their items.

I really don't understand the anti-Amazon attitude around here. I buy from Amazon (marketplace sellers usually, so Prime is useless to me, as is their Free Shipping option) quite regularly and it's a good and convenient place to get most of what I want...

... That is, most of it that isn't obscure imports or PC games.

This is the only reason I don't have Prime. Most of the things I've gotten are from sellers that it doesn't apply to.
Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.

I think amazon is being charged a tax or something, so they increased their shipping costs to offset this.

I don't remember all of the details.

ps amazon sucks.

I noticed the price jump as well. It was $2.98 to ship a movie or CD, and when Rob Zombie's new CD came out, I went to order it and the shipping was $3.98, plus tax (something else I don't remember Amazon charging before). It sucks, but considering most sellers in the Amazon Marketplace charge $3.99 for shipping, it's not a surprising leap.

Wish I had a place that carried something other than country music and pop (their rock/metal sections are pathetic). And as if that weren't bad enough, the few stores that do sell CDs only carry edited versions of the music around here (though I'd love to see what they did with Rob Zombie's "Teenage Nosferatu Pussy").

I don't think Amazon will ship any video games to me. At least I seem to remember them stopping with international shipping of games at some point. I wonder if they've changed it again.

If they haven't, that's why I have an anti-Amazon attitude.

A friend of mine has an Amazon Prime account, and literally everyone in our social circle just uses her account. It is incredible, and I highly recommend this shit.

^^^ This. Even without prime, I usually make a purchase for another person along with the stuff I want to get free shipping by going over the 25 dollar limit.

For smaller purchases like what you describe, yeah. It may be better to get it locally.

Speaking of price hikes, eBay's offering a new service - mentioned in their updated User Agreement - where sellers have the choice of offering their items for sale to people in other countries, by shipping things to a domestic collection and reshipping point (serviced by eBay) from which they will be sent the rest of the way. Seems like it could add a couple dollars, or more, for some sales, but it is entirely optional and a seller might appreciate the convenience.
